Carrigtwohill Under-9

V Lakewood Venue: Lakewood, Ball-

incollig On Monday 14th May,

18 of the Carrigtwohill Under-9 squad travelled to Ballincollig to take on Lakewood in another se- ries of small sided games. On what was a lovely evening for football, each player had 2 competitive games against Lakewood, who were very welcoming hosts.

All present had a very

enjoyable evening. Every- one agrees that all the players in this committed squad are really improv- ing with every game that passes. It is brilliant to see the confidence growing in all the Under-9’s, as well as their development

as

footballers. Their team- play and positional aware- ness is getting better with each match. This group of players is

developing a very strong bond which suggests the can look forward to many years playing soccer to- gether.

Carrigtwohill U16 – 3

Carrigaline A - 4 Venue: Shanbally The Carrigtwohill Unit-

ed Under-16’s crashed out of the Local Cup against Carrigaline A in dra-

matic fashion on a sunny evening in Shanbally. In both other U-16’s Cup’s this season, Carrigtwohill had lost only after ex- tra-time was played so they we hoping for better luck this time out – but it was not to be. It was the visitors who

started the match with the upper hand and Car- rigtwohill took the lead af- ter 5 minutes when Anesh Swani continued his goal scoring streak by weav- ing past two defenders to finish past the on-rushing goalkeeper. Rob Adam, playing in

midfield was instrumental in controlling the midfield play but he received a bad knock after 15 minutes and had to come off. Carrigtwohill were missing several

other

players on the night and this was yet another blow to their hopes - as for the rest

of the match, they

were unable to control the match like they had for the first 15 minutes. It was now Carrigaline

who were on the front foot and they scored two goals – one a very unlucky de- flected own goal – to put themselves in a good posi- tion. However, just before the half-time whistle was blown, Carrigtwohill lev- elled with a goal bundled in from a corner.. The second half was

frantic. It was a typical Cup tie. The re-arranged Carrigtwohill team were

suspensions and

injuries probably affecting most teams at this stage of the season, once again this was a massive squad per- formance going forward for midleton .

playing a more direct style than normal and pushing forward for the win but they were cruelly exposed by the pacey Carrigaline winger who caught them on the break – firstly scor- ing himself and then pro- viding the assist for the 4th goal.

this season, Anesh came to the

Not for the first time rescue. Despite

playing with a bruised an- kle from a first half tackle, he scored a superb long range shot from the cor- ner of the penalty box to bring Carrigtwohill back into the match at 4-3 10 minutes left and a goal was needed. It was all hands to the deck as Sean DeBurca moved into midfield to leave just 3 defenders and it was all Carrigtwohill at

this

stage with a succession of corners, frees and attacks

but still the break-through would not come. The

decisive chance

came with just 5 minutes left when after some clever inter-play, Bartek, playing up front found himself in on the goalkeeper and his shot struck the post and rebounded back to the de- fender who cleared under pressure. Such fine margins but

it was not to be on the night. A superb effort all round and the players can be proud of their effort on the night. Man of the Match:

games in the true spirit of sport

Carrigtwohill fielded

2 × 6 a-side teams and the players were asked to play in different positions at various stages of the games. It is great to see the kids

getting used to positions and the different roles in- volved in each one. This is something the

has been worked on in training over the last few weeks and is brilliant to see the fruits of the labour. All present were treated

to some solid defending, super passing, build up play and some spectacu- lar goals. The games were high scoring and it is fair to say Carrigtwohill came out on top. Owen and Ana shone

for one of the sides and Isaac and Ryan were tops for the other. Well done to all in-

volved!

Mallow Town - 0 Venue: Ballyadam Park Carrigtwohill’s

final

home game of the sea- son was played on Sun- day morning last in Bal- lyadam Park, when they welcomed Mallow Town A. The team started the game well with midfield on top and they were cre- ating numerous chances without managing to fin- ish them. However, when Jack O’Regan drove hard at the Mallow defence and was brought down for a penalty, he dusted himself down and stepped up to send the goalie the wrong way, to give Carrigtwohill the lead. The players themselves

knew how much on top they were so the message going out for the second half was same again and the goals would come. Just 5 minutes in and the home side got a second when left back Mark McCarthy went on a great run down the wing beating his man and cutting in before un- leashing an unstoppable

shot that flew into the top corner. It was total dominance

at this stage with constant attacking, the 3rd

which led to goal when Cian

Lee burst down the right beating his man before putting in a great cross for Evan O’Keeffe to tap in. Having been provider

for the third goal of the game Cian got on the score sheet when he fin- ished well to seal the win. This was a great way

to finish the home league games, with all 12 players playing their part. The work rate and skill on dis- play was a joy to watch and showed how far this group of players have im- proved from the start of the season. Midfielder Cian Lee

gets the Man of the Match award today for his non- stop all-action display up and down the right wing. His goal and an assist was deserved on the day. Man of the Match: Cian Lee.
