Richard Griffin

When and why did you start RGC? We started here in November 1999. Before that I had a carpentry and building business. We were doing lots of work in the town and were looking for some storage space. We found this place and thought it was a bit large for a store so we decided to open a builders’ merchant instead. My brother, Mark, is the branch manager, and looks after the day to day running of the building materials side downstairs and all the deliveries. I mainly look after the upstairs kitchen and bathroom showroom and installation side.

That was a big change to being a carpenter We did try to run the two companies side by side for a while but it didn’t really work, because quite understandably, local builders didn’t really want to buy their supplies from me if I was still also a competitor! So we closed that side of the business down and just concentrated on supplying the local traders, and the public with DIY goods. That

seems to have worked well and we have expanded over the years. The recession was hard but we got through the other side. The only things we fit now are from our own showrooms - kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. And most importantly, from our customers point of view, our own in-house fitting team do that.

are water-based which is more environmentally friendly than oil- based products.

How have building materials changed over the last 10 years? One of the biggest changes is more insulation in properties. Celotex type Insulation Board goes in floors, walls, roofs - you name it, it insulates everything. There are other products out there that will do similar but generally Celotex or similar PIR (polyisocyanurate) board are the most popular insulation products. If you can get your house insulated as much as possible then you are going to use less energy over its lifetime. Concerns about the environment are driving these changes. My dad was a painter and decorator and when he was an apprentice they were using lead-based paint but now many products

Are water-based products as good as oil-based ones? In certain applications they can be better, in certain applications they can be just as good, but there are some applications I am not 100% convinced about. I am not entirely sure that water-based exterior paint for properties on the coast here is going to last in just quite the same way. But if it is environmentally safer, then we should make the effort to use it.

Do people come in and ask for greener products? Yes, but I think at the moment it’s mainly driven by the media and the government, or specifications from architects or interior designers. We are not really noticing people saying they want a super-green house yet, it’s more they are being encouraged to go down that route. However, I think it will come.

What are your bestselling products? Across the board it’s quite a lot
