Beautiful Blooms Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery
It’s bare root season again for us, which means we’ve been busy potting up a fantastic selection of UK grown roses.
This year’s range is really exciting, with lots of great named varieties
comprising vivid colours and beautifully scented blooms. We prune our roses and pot them into our quality hand mixed compost, which contains long- lasting slow release fertilisers, ensuring the best start possible. Provided the ground is not dry or frozen, roses can be planted all year round. A quality label accompanies each plant, with a detailed description and photo of the bloom, making them a perfect gift.
For smaller gardens or growing in containers, try a patio rose, which are easy to grow – needing only light pruning and remaining compact around 45cm tall. One of our favourites is Rosa ‘Sweet Memories’. A great repeat fl owerer with few thorns, its large clusters of small lemon yellow fl owers are hard to forget.
If you have a bit more space, then a bush rose is perfect, reaching a height of 60 to 100cm. Light pruning will ensure vigour and promote blooming. With large blooms starting deep apricot in the centre, later paling to creamy white, Rosa ‘Champagne Moment’ is well worth toasting.
For pillars, arches, pergolas and walls, a climbing rose can be trained to grow from two to fi ve metres high. Rosa ‘Dublin Bay’ (pictured) is a standout beauty, producing clusters of medium sized fully double, bright scarlet-crimson, fl owers. It’s great for local gardens as it will tolerate poor soils.
To celebrate the arrival of our Christmas trees on Saturday the 2nd of December from 10am-3pm, we will be hosting carols performed by Viva Voices and serving up festive treats, everyone is welcome.
