Councillor Update Another success to report to you that will make life
just that bit nicer for residents and visitors. Hurray for the new Corfe Barrows Nature park! The Great Heath Living Landscape project is a pan-Dorset partnership project supported by the Borough of Poole and run by Dorset Wildlife Trust. It is great news to have heard in September that three additional areas close to Broadstone have been acquired by the Borough for use as new open space to be included in the Great Heath.
They are – an extension to an area owned by the BoP in Delph Woods, an area of green space at Arrowsmith Coppice and one at Corfe Hills West. These green spaces have been added together with others to make up the Corfe Barrows Nature Park, that is said to be ‘a wild world of meadows and heathland in Corfe Mullen and Broadstone that residents can explore on bike or foot to discover trails and circular routes.’
The Heritage Lottery Fund grant that supports the maintenance of these vital open spaces has been extended to March 2018. Sixteen miles of the old Southampton to Dorchester railway track that is now the Castleman Trailway and 10 miles of other walkways joins many of the sites that makes up the Great Heath project, consisting of 580 hectares of important habitats and two nature parks that have been created. 342 working parties doing 16,309 volunteer-hours have helped with the work, contributing to managing the natural habitats. The scientists have made 20,319 records of 2,233 different species so far on the Heath.
There are many amazing stories of communities returning habitat to Heath, with new and vastly improved access for people to have space to mention in this short article. Special thanks are due to The Erica Trust, Colin Panter, Natural England, the Brockington legacy, The Fine Foundation, Dorset Wildlife Trust members and all local communities who have generously helped so far with the creation of a special place of which we should all be proud to be a part.
