Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch November is the month I spend telling the children


it’s too early to think about Christmas, whilst knowing deep down that it really is time to sort out Christmas!


When shopping on the ‘net’ here are a few tips to remember:


• If something looks too good to be true – it probably is! Check prices against two or three other sites to make sure you are getting a real bargain


• Buy from sites recommended by friends or check reviews


• Be extra careful if buying from abroad. Some of the ‘best value’ sites appear to be UK based, but when you check delivery you will fi nd your item is travelling across the globe, with extensive delivery times


• ALWAYS use a secure shop – all reputable retailers web addresses will begin with https: and feature the padlock symbol. Some sites will closely copy a familiar site to trick consumers


• Use a credit card or Paypal to make your payments for extra protection for your purchases


• If you are buying items on your phone whilst grabbing a coffee during your trawl round the shops, it is safer to use your own mobile data instead of public wifi .


I still love the experience of trawling the shops with the carols playing in the background, so here are more hints:


• Don’t carry too much cash around and take care when using cash machines that they have not been tampered with, or that there is no-one hanging around


• Don’t buy more than you can easily carry, and don’t put bags down where they can be grabbed


• Park in a secure, well-lit car park and make sure your purchases are not on show if being left for a period of time.


Finally, Christmas is supposed to be the season of joy and goodwill, so please don’t get into debt or cause yourselves extra worry from spending money that you cannot afford. In our family we do a Charity Shop Sweepstake where we each pick a relative to buy a gift for which HAS to come from a charity shop with a limit of £5 – we get some great gifts and help charities too!
