Councillor Update

Many congratulations to Broadstone Middle School girls who represented Poole and East Dorset Secondary Schools in the English Schools Football Association Under 11 Championships in early October. They maintained the high standards and level of success achieved in previous years by winning the South West Regional Championships and gained a place in the National fi nals. Congratulations also to all Broadstone schools for the excellent exam results achieved this year and the improvements made over previous years.

The consultation on the proposed cuts to both the No.32 and H1 bus services has now fi nished. We would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way. We know how important these services are for many of you. We await the analysis with interest, but as on previous occasions, we will fi ght to protect the services as best we can. No decisions will be made until early in the New Year, so we will be meeting with offi cers to discuss the best way forward.

Several months have passed since Vikki and I asked for a meeting with the Portfolio Holder and Head of Service to discuss the impact of the hike in car parking charges that took place last April. Since then many other highways issues have arisen including delays in replacing worn out white lines, yet more parking problems, proposed changes to Dunyeats Road, 20 miles per hour requests and abuse of one-way systems, especially in Grange Road. We were fi nally offered a date in mid-October, which was too late for us to report back this month. We will, therefore, provide a summary of our discussions for the December update.

We were both involved in discussions around the planned changes to the Lewesdon Drive play area, and stressed the long-standing drainage issues should be addressed at the same time. However, this has not been done so we can only hope that by re-siting some of the equipment the problems will be reduced. It does seem rather illogical to improve the equipment without attending to one of the issues which can all too often reduce its use. In addition to comments about the drainage we have also received reports that some of the repainting is unsatisfactory. These, and the safety concerns relating to heavy vehicles moving on site have all been passed onto the relevant offi cer for investigation.

The absence of effective scrutiny in the decision- 14

making process has once again come under fi re. Both Vikki and I have challenged two recent decisions. One, made under urgency rules, and so could not be called-in for scrutiny, proved to be something of a disaster and has gone back to the drawing board. Vikki identifi ed serious fl aws in the Council’s new Business Rate support scheme, which, if implemented, would have meant many businesses receiving support they were not entitled to. The other decision centred on the development of a Community Land Trust and the expenditure of a £750k Government grant. We were expected to vote in support at Full Council without being provided with any details whatsoever. It was rather like signing a blank cheque, which of course, no one should do.

Our next surgeries: Saturday 4th November, 2nd December and 6th January (2018) commencing at 10am in Broadstone Library.
