Broadstone Community

Speed Watch Making Broadstone safer

In the past five months many Broadstone residents, motorists,

cyclists, pedestrians and others have approached the Broadstone Community Speed Watch team to express their gratitude for our efforts. This is hugely encouraging to the team, who invest a lot of time and energy to support your community by acting to reduce speeding on our local roads.

Many also ask us questions about what we do, and some are answered below. If you have a question you would like to submit for our next article, please send it to: enquiries@broadstonecsw.uk.

Why do you not operate when there are lots of people around and when the risks are greatest? CSW operations are mounted at any time when the traffic is free flowing. At busy periods, when the traffic volume is greatest, vehicles tend to ‘convoy’ and speeds tend to be much reduced, and thereby so are the risks to other road users. In addition, CSW operates in response to requests from our residents who report speeding as an issue on roads in which they reside, and at the times when such activity is an issue.

Why do you not cover all roads? Not all roads are suitable for CSW operations. Every road proposed for CSW operations must be subjected to a risk assessment carried out by Dorset Police, and the sites and locations approved and recorded by Dorset Police before any CSW operation may be conducted.

Who chooses the roads? A road is assessed based on information provided, and concerns raised by residents living in that road. Roads have to be risk assessed as indicated above.

Why don’t you operate at different times of the day? CSW teams do try to vary the times of CSW operations with morning, afternoon and evening sessions, each session lasting around 1-1.5 hours.

What powers do CSWs have? None. CSW volunteers monitor traffic speeds using a speed monitoring device that meets the standard approved by the Police. Vehicles being driven at speeds in excess of that posted are observed and recorded, and this information is passed to the Police for their consideration and action as appropriate.

Please observe the speed limits and drive safely. Thank you
