Healthy forecast for West Midlands employment rate

By Dan Harrison

Luxurious living at the Belfry Hotel

A show which aims to celebrate “the premium peak of human aspiration” returns to the West Midlands this month. The second Midlands Luxury

Show, co-hosted by Equitrade Capital (Global Financial Market) and J&A Fine Art, is back at The Belfry Hotel & Resort on 29 and 30 September. Following the success of the

inaugural show last year, the decision was made to double the show in size and to also expand the event over two days. There will be over 65 exhibitors

offering show-only exclusive deals. It will also feature influential speakers and high-end fashion. Among the attractions on the

first day an opportunity to listen to talks from micro-sculptor Willard Wigan alongside Janine Edwards from St James Place Wealth Management and Michelle Bailey, managing director of The Luxury Network. On the Saturday the show will be

opened by Paul Faulkner, chief executive of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. Following that the attractions will include talks from Guy Portelli, the 2008 Dragons Den success, and fashion shows from The Closet, Maison Grace by Captain Tortue.

The West Midlands has been handed a boost on the jobs front – with a healthy increase in employment and a fall in inactivity. Figures released by the Office for

National Statistics reveal the region’s employment rate increased by 0.9 per cent between April and June, while unemployment remained unchanged at 5.8 per cent. The inactivity rate – the

proportion of the population not in employment who haven’t been seeking work within the last four weeks or are unable to start work in the next two – fell by one per cent to 23.2 per cent. Furthermore, the region enjoyed a job creation surge between

December and March, with an increase of 65,000 new workforce jobs. Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce chief executive Paul Faulkner (pictured) welcomed the news – but said work still needs to be done to reduce unemployment. The unemployment rate

in the West Midlands remains significantly higher than the national average of 4.4 per cent. Mr Faulkner said: "The latest

regional labour market statistics are encouraging, particularly given the large increase in workforce jobs in the region, and the strong upward trend in employment figures, coupled with

a significant drop in economic inactivity over the last quarter. However, the unemployment rate remains stubbornly unchanged, so while we welcome ongoing good news on jobs creation, there is more to be done to get unemployment down to

the national average. "The Chambers are

interested to understand better which sectors are

looking to increase their workforce, and whether this reported growth has impacted on the availability of talent. "We strongly encourage

businesses to complete our next Quarterly Business Report survey which launches soon."

Graduate gallops into role

A Birmingham School of Acting alumnus is set to appear in an internationally acclaimed production of War Horse, the story of the role played by horses in the First World War. Lewis Howard will be playing the role of the heart of Joey, a horse

from Devon who was sold to the British cavalry during the First World War and shipped to France. The National Theatre play, based on the award-winning

novel by Michael Morpurgo, centres around Joey’s journey as he gets caught up in enemy fire, fights on both sides and eventually finds himself in no man’s land. It also follows Joey’s owner, Albert, who is on a mission to find his beloved horse and bring him home to England. At its heart are ground-breaking puppets by

South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping and charging horses to life on stage. Lewis will join the production on its

upcoming national tour, beginning in Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury on Friday 15 September. The play will then visit various UK cities, including Birmingham, before closing in Glasgow in February 2019.
