Teach First founder recognised with honorary degree

The US founder and CEO of Teach First, Brett Wigdortz, has received an honorary doctoral degree from Birmingham City University. Wigdortz has led Teach First since its launch

in July 2002. The charity aims to tackle educational inequality, providing training and support to create inspirational classroom leaders who help to change the lives of children living in low-income communities across the UK. Originally from Ocean Township located in

east central Monmouth County, New Jersey, Wigdortz graduated with an Honours Bachelor degree in Economics from the University of Richmond and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Hawaii. After graduating Wigdortz worked as a

consultant, a journalist and a researcher, before joining worldwide management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company. He founded Teach First in 2002, and since that

time the charity has recruited nearly 7,000 teachers and now partners with schools serving low-income communities in every region of England and Wales. He is also co-founder and trustee of Teach For

All, a global network of independent social enterprises working to expand educational opportunities in their own countries. Wigdortz was awarded an OBE in the 2013

Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for Services to Education and has won numerous awards over the past 15 years.

‘Since Teach First launched in the Midlands in 2007, we’ve worked alongside Birmingham City University to place over 1,000 graduates into schools serving low-income communities in the area’

His book ‘Success Against the Odds’, a candid

account of the first ten years of Teach First, was named WHSmith’s ‘Business Book of the Month’ in 2012. He will step down as CEO of Teach First this autumn to take on the role of honorary president. He said: “Since Teach First launched in the Midlands in 2007, we’ve worked alongside Birmingham City University to place over 1,000 graduates into schools serving low-income communities in the area.

US trade talks welcomed

British American Business (BAB) has welcomed the outcome of talks between Secretary of State Liam Fox, and US trade representative Robert Lighthizer in Washington. The talks were part of a meeting of the UK-US

Trade and Investment Working Group, which is looking at future economic integrations between the two countries. The BAB said: “BAB fully supports the Working

Group’s objective to explore options of future economic integration between the UK and US. “As the UK prepares to leave the EU, making it

a priority to give certainty to business and minimising disruption through a focus on providing commercial continuity for US and UK businesses is highly welcome by our membership.”

“The university’s commitment to both our participants undertaking their teaching qualification and their support for disadvantaged pupils in the Midlands is truly inspirational. It’s therefore a huge privilege to become part of the University with this honorary doctorate.” As well as being the regional training provider for

Teach First, Birmingham City University trains more teachers than any other university in the West Midlands and enjoys strong partnerships with over 1,000 schools, colleges and training organisations.

BABC to launch in

the East Midlands The launch of the British American Business Council (BABC) in the East Midlands takes place at the offices of Browne Jacobsen in Nottingham on 13 October. Special guest at the launch

will be Emma McClarkin (pictured), one of two Conservative MEPs in the East Midlands and an expert on overseas trade, particularly with the USA. BABC co-ordinator Lauren Hunt said: “BABC Midlands is growing in membership, and with us now expanding into the East Midlands, our organisation is going from strength-to-strength.”
