Name: Colin Rowe Company: Close Brothers Asset Management (CBAM) Job Title: Practice Director
What does your company do? We provide a complete financial planning and investment service to professionals, business owners, retirees and other high-net-worth individuals. Central to our proposition is our award-winning, institutional- quality investment capability.
How did it all start? I’ve worked in wealth management for 26 years, including roles at HSBC Corporate, Kleinwort Benson Private Bank and Irwin Mitchell Solicitors.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? Building brilliant teams for various organisations that have made a real difference to the wealth of our clients and their families. Also, surviving the many changes the industry and economy has thrown at us over the last 30 years!
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Starting a second family; so far so good!
What keeps you awake at night? Usually my two young daughters!
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? I would have taken more risk with my personal investments at an earlier stage in my life. I was a little too cautious.
What has surprised you most in your job recently? Earlier this year we conducted research with the CIPD on financial wellbeing in the workplace, surveying employers and employees across the UK. We found that one in four employees said that financial concerns have affected their ability to do their job. It shows how financial education and access to financial planning can help employees and in turn their employers.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? I believe that to be successful you need to enjoy what you do and have a passion for the industry you work in.
Which business do you most admire? I’m a big fan of John Lewis due to their high levels of customer service.
What exciting projects is your business working on? We have recently launched a retirement advice service called Intelligent Retirement® in the Midlands. It combines financial planning, a choice of income solutions and our proven investment management skills for clients who are approaching, or who are already in retirement. It offers a co- ordinated approach to meeting income requirements throughout retirement – however long that might be – while managing risks to capital.
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? As we recently launched our new practice we wanted the opportunity to meet local businesses to learn from their experience and to share our knowledge and expertise with them. While our practice is new we have acquired one IFA Firm (ASPL Ltd) and transferred in a few hundred existing CBAM clients that already lived in the Midlands. Going forward, we are very
keen to work with local businesses and clients for our mutual benefit. The membership will allow us to engage with fellow members to help support our client base and to support other firms and their employees as we already do nationally through our financial education services. Please be aware, the value of
investments can fall as well as rise and that past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and you could get back less than invested.
