Rates reform not doing enough

A real estate firm with a basebase in Birmingham has accused the Government of kicking the issue of business rates into the “long grass”. Colliers International, which has

a base in Brindleyplace, Birmingham, were speaking after the Queen’s Speech included no mention of business rates. John Webber, head of rating at

business rates advisors Colliers International, said: “In this turbulent time, when businesses are looking for help to rebuild after the recession, it would appear that the important matter of business rates has been kicked into the long grass once again. “With a new rating list now in

place and the lack of a working appeals system, ratepayers are stuck with assessments which are too high with no sign of a resolution in the near future.” Paul Faulkner, chief executive of

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, backed Colliers’ view and added: “The Government needs to commit to reducing the level of upfront taxes foisted on businesses if they intend to create an effective pro-enterprise culture in this country.”
