A Man’s World Portraits Steve Oney (Mercer University Press) Steve Oney has as-

sembled a collection of 20 of his magazine pro- files on some of the more interesting men that he met and interviewed be-

tween 1977-2011. The veteran journalist is an interesting and highly skilled writer, making each of these profiles highly intriguing and entertaining. Because of my studies in South- ern music, I turned immediately to his article on the great Gregg Allman. It did not disap- point. Oney caught up with Gregg in 1984, be- tween the first coming of The Allman Brothers Band and their second “top of the world” run that lasted from 1989-2014. Oney painted a mental picture of a man who had at one time been one of America’s biggest rock stars, now humbled by playing the club cir- cuit, before returning to the throne. In his introduction, the author explains

that all of the pieces, published between 1977 and 2011, focus on “fascinating” men. Oney divided his profiles into four sections, begin- ning with “Fighters,” which includes profiles of football star Herschel Walker; the combat death of young Marine Chris Leon; profes- sional basketball coach Hubie Brown; Holly- wood security consultant Aaron Cohen; and veteran police reporter Jake Jacoby. Section two features “Creators,” including novelist Robert Penn Warren; architect John Port- man; trumpeter Herb Alpert; TV executive Brandon Tartikoff; and Hollywood gossip columnist Mark Lisanti. In “Actors,” Oney

profiles Star Wars and Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford; Dennis Franz; Nick Nolte; Harry Dean Stanton; and Bryan Brown. The last section, “Desperadoes,” focuses on pro- fessional baseball star turned cocaine addict, Bo Belinsky; the aforementioned Gregg All- man; political provocateur Andrew Breitbart; interior designer con-man Craig Raywood; and novelist Harry Crews. With A Man’s World, the author shows

us all how it is done. Excellent reporting, blended with fine writing skills make for a highly entertaining and informative read for the summer.

Hearts in Suspension Stephen King (University of Maine Press)

Hearts in Suspension is a

rare treat. It’s a look at best- selling author Stephen King during his college days of the 1960’s. It was a time of war,

the police action in Vietnam was at its height, and young people including King were protesting the war and trying to make sense of the actions of the President of the United States. Not so much different than 2017. The narrative includes the original

novella Hearts in Atlantis, a work of fiction based on those times, but also a brand-new nonfiction look at the times through the eyes and memories of the author. The collection of essays focuses prima-

rily on a four-year period starting in the fall of 1966 and ending in 1970, shortly after the
