SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS

PDL SOLUTIONS (EUROPE) LIMITED

IS A LEADING PROVIDER OF MULTI- DISCIPLINED ENGINEERING DESIGN AND ANALYSIS CONSULTANCY SERVICES TO CLIENTS OPERATING IN PREDOMINANTLY THE NUCLEAR, DEFENCE AND

ENGINEERING EXPERTISE

By applying sound engineering judgement and the use of fundamental engineering calculations, PDL engineers are able to provide an initial sanity check at the front-end of a project as to the structural capacity and the technical viability of a given offshore renewable energy concept, before any parts are physically made.

ASSURANCE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING

Having established that the gross engineering assumptions for the offshore renewable energy concept are indeed correct, the iterative use of some of the world’s leading Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software such as OrcaFlex, ANSYS Structural, ANSYS Windmodeller and ANSYS CFX, as an integral part of the subsequent detailed design process, enables PDL engineers to provide the necessary assurances to the concept developers, funding bodies and operators alike that the proposed concept will stand up to the rigours of an offshore environment and that it will provide a consistent and optimal energy yield.

THE OFFSHORE ENERGY MARKET SECTORS Based in Hexham, some 25 miles to the west of Newcastle upon Tyne, PDL engineers have, over the past 12 years, supported some of the most technically demanding projects at some of the most notable national and international entities.

A COMPLETE APPLICATION The PDL engineering design and analysis skill sets are applied to not only the complete turbine assembly itself, i.e., from the blade tip at the top to the soil interaction at the base, but they also play a pivotal role in validating the proposed manufacturing, installation and operational processes.

PDL managing director, Paul Charlton, concludes “Our role is to mitigate our clients risk, shorten their development timescales and reduce their development costs. Three key attributes for any offshore renewable energy project”.
