CTC MARINE PROJECTS (CTC) – NEW PEOPLE, NEW SKILLS, NEW INVESTMENT – PREPARING FOR OFFSHORE RENEWABLES

CTC a leading North East subsea company specialising in cable lay and marine trenching, recognises the challenges involved with growing a business in the offshore sector.

With a solid track record for its investment in technology and securing vessels to meet with new market needs, CTC is proactively looking at the gaps where it can bring further technology services to the rapidly growing offshore renewables market.

INVESTMENT IN PEOPLE AND SKILLS This would be forthcoming without the necessary investment in people and skills to ensure the right solutions are developed and engineered, and at a scale to meet with the market’s rate of growth. They recognise their responsibility to continue to train and develop employees as well as

They recently supported the ‘Oceans of Opportunity’ careers event for schools, which took place at Newcastle University. Along with other local companies and education providers, they took part in an exciting day which allowed students to participate in a range of stimulating interactive activities that bring science and technology learning to life.

Further supporting local education authorities, CTC is also a part of a Business Engagement Programme. This aim of the programme is to link local employers with education providers in the region.

LOOKING FORWARD

Looking forward to the step change in the offshore renewables market in 2014/15, CTC recognises it needs to act now in order to successfully grow its business over the next 10 years with a focus on excellence in delivering ‘Right First Time’ solutions.

New investments are under development and consideration, and the business is on the cusp of the wave of this new offshore wind growth.

GRADUATE AND TRAINEE RECRUITMENT

In 2012 CTC will also increase its intake of graduates. The Company will maintain its search for the best young engineers who will be given a simulating career in the subsea industry. Whilst recruiting graduates, they continue to take on offshore trainees, having already secured 8 places in 2011 with a further intake planned in February 2012. The trainees are provided with a structured training and development programme, aimed at developing a passport of competency to allow them to progress their career within the company and the industry in general.

SKILLS GAP

promote the industry to a wider audience. It is important to them that they play their part in educating others about the career opportunities in engineering in order to secure the future of the industry.

LOCAL EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENT LINKS

Through its work with local Schools, Colleges and Universities, CTC is looking to increase the profile of engineering, particularly the challenges and opportunities of working within the offshore renewables and subsea industry.

‘ENCOURAGING ENGINEERING’ PROJECT

As well as supporting this initiative, CTC has been working in partnership with Darlington Borough Council and engineering companies across the town to develop an ‘Encouraging Engineering’ project.

As part of the programme, which supports a four-year Mechanical Engineering degree, CTC provided a summer placement and mentoring support to a local first year student attending Imperial College, London. They will continue to offer a summer placement to the students involved in this project until they complete their degree.

As the offshore renewables industry feels the pinch of limited skilled resources, CTC will continue to work with education authorities to promote the engineering discipline and seek the best graduate talent. Supporting local students and attracting talent to the area will hopefully increase the required skill base in the region for securing jobs and market share from the offshore wind supply chain. Although they are internationally recognised, with satellite offices in Singapore and Perth Australia, accompanied by an international supply chain, CTC is still very committed to its North East delivery base and strong local supply chain.
