TAG ENERGY SOLUTIONS IS ON COURSE TO SECURE A CORE POSITION WITHIN THE UK AND INTERNATIONAL OFFSHORE RENEWABLES SUPPLY CHAIN
Its £20million investment into the UK’s first offshore tubular foundation manufacturing plant and surrounding facilities represents the foresight, innovation and engineering capabilities of a company that has identified offshore renewables as a key growth area of the energy sector.
TAG FACILITY OFFICIAL OPENING Following the facility’s official opening by Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, in September, TAG has received considerable plaudits from the industry for the new 6.920 square metre plant and its innovative manufacturing process.
Chief Executive Alex Dawson said: “The concept behind the investment was for a state-of-the-art facility for the serial production of large tubulars and cans to be used in the construction of monopiles, transition pieces and jackets.
“In terms of securing the capital to implement this we received £3 million of grant - £1.5 million from the
Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and £1.5 million from Regional Development Agency One North East, as well as £17 million in private equity funding. This came from the Environmental Technologies Fund (ETF) and Platina Partners.
We have seen quite a change over the last year within the business, but we now have one of the best facilities for renewable energy in Europe, capable of producing around 100,000 tonnes of completed steel per annum.”
FACILITY CAPABILITY
The steel is rolled and welded into the large diameter tubulars needed in the construction of the various components of
foundations for the renewable and energy industries. However alongside this core capability, TAG is also able to undertake this complete construction process itself, with the 6000 tonne load out quay and 250-metre wet dock of the old shipyard lending themselves well to this type of work.
“In parallel to the new construction work, we have been demolishing the old slipways and re-grading the area for external jacket assembly and construction. We are also about to complete the building of a brand-new blasting and painting facility,” added Alex.
