SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE In the case of TAG, the company’s previous long experience in the oil and gas sector gives it a notable market advantage in understanding the requirements and challenges of offshore projects. The building and delivery of these structures to tight schedules and budgets, along with all the necessary control and planning functions, comes as second nature to a management team with close to 30 years offshore experience.
CONTRACT CONFIDENCE Importantly, the location of TAG’s operations on the east coast of the UK means that this new facility is ideally placed to take advantage of the upcoming Round 3 offshore wind
developments, as well as opportunities in the European market.
“Over the last year we have tendered for over £1 billion worth of projects and carried out our first commercial contract in September,” Alex explained.
“I am confident in securing workload in the very near
future. Because of capacity becoming particularly full within Europe, we are also getting enquiries for some of the new North Sea oil and gas developments, which is ideal for filling in the gaps between renewable projects.”
EXISTING WIND ENERGY DEVELOPMENTS
TAG is also engaged in a number of conversations regarding UK Round 2 developments.
With these projects based in and around the UK, Alex believes that a strong national supply chain is essential: “The renewables market is massive, and as such we see there is a distinct shortfall in the supply capacity to meet demand required. However, to date 80 per cent of UK wind farm developments have been manufactured abroad, in part due to a notion that the UK does not have the required manufacturing capability.
“Yet we see significant infrastructure springing up across North East England, not only in terms of our own facility, but many other companies with complementary skills for this market. I do believe that this region has the ability to become a key hub in the UK for renewable energy.
“To this end, I have recently taken on the role of chairman of Energi Coast, North East England’s renewables group to showcase just what capabilities are available,” he continued.
“The plant is designed to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we want to grow the business to this level,” said Alex.
“Already we see a lot of opportunity in expanding into upstream applications and design, as well as downstream into operations and maintenance as well. We already have a future strategy in place, which will require further investment, but with the investment community seeming very interested in the renewables sector, we see good indications for the market.”
