SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS
TATA STEEL HARTLEPOOL PIVOTAL TO RENEWABLES DRIVE Tata Steel has a long-standing presence and significant technical
expertise in the international energy and power sector, and an increasing involvement in the expanding renewable energy industry.
By providing high performance steels, backed with dedicated support and expert advice the company delivers and meets the demands of an energy industry operating in the world’s most hostile and challenging environments.
HARTLEPOOL
The company’s site in Hartlepool, north- east England, is absolutely pivotal in the company’s drive to meet this growing renewables requirement.
As part of a wider undertaking to facilitate the development of this sector, Tata Steel has invested substantially in its operations to enhance its steel products and services.
INVESTMENT
This includes a £2million spend in Hartlepool, this investment was announced at the same time as the creation of a supply deal with German steel tube producer Eisenbau Krämer (EBK) to increase Tata Steel’s offering in the renewable energy industry.
WIND ENERGY MARKET
Growing activity means the offshore wind arena will require large volumes of jacket fabrications for wind tower structures. The Hartlepool development will establish a central supply base for steel tubular sections to be used in the fabrication of steel jacket foundations for wind turbines.
It involves the modification of buildings and investment in new assets on the site. Work to clear space began last month and the procurement process for new equipment is underway.
It is expected all new kit will be in place by February with the supply base fully operational in Spring 2012.
COMPONENT MANUFACTURE Components will be manufactured from tubulars at the new facility and prepared for welding into the finished structures, shortening throughput times and improving cost efficiency for customers, who will be able to source all steel components from a single supplier.

Preparation work will include cutting-to- length, welding, shot blasting, coating and end-profiling. Materials will then be stored for shipment in kit form to fabricators in the UK and mainland Europe using local deepwater ports and the UK rail network.
PARTNERSHIP
The complementary size capabilities of Tata Steel and EBK will together provide what is believed to be the most comprehensive and cost- competitive package in this market. Under the supply agreement, both companies will produce tubes from
400mm diameter upwards from plate manufactured by Tata Steel’s plants in Scunthorpe or Dalzell.
In addition to tubulars for jacket foundation structures, Tata Steel is also able to supply smaller sized tubes and sections suitable for all primary and secondary steel work within wind turbine fabrications.
COMMITMENT
The investment and EBK partnership further reinforces Tata Steel’s commitment to establishing a significant presence as a supplier to the renewables sector as the drive to transform the energy supply scene in the EU gathers pace.
