SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS

NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY CENTRE (NAREC) – A WORLD LEADING CENTRE FOR ACCELERATING OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGY

North East England is well placed to take advantage of the offshore renewables industry given the expertise, assets and innovative capabilities held in the region from over 30 years of success in the offshore oil, gas, automotive, manufacturing sectors and academic institutions. These competencies coupled with Narec’s facilities are helping North East England to create a world-leading technology hub to accelerate the deployment of offshore renewables in the UK.

MaRINET. Recently completed Project Snapper has been shortlisted as finalists in the IET Innovation Awards 2011 and The Engineer Technology & Innovation Awards 2011. Narec also took part in the kick-off meeting in Dublin earlier this month for MaRINET. Focusing on wave energy and tidal stream converters, as well as offshore wind turbines for electrical generation, the project aims to coordinate research and development at all scales of prototype development. Narec will provide 49 weeks of access to its testing facilities for marine prototype testing, 3MW tidal turbine drive train and electrical grid integration.

WORLD LEADING TESTING AND DEVELOPMENT FACILITY The region is home to the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec). Established in 2003, it has seen investment of over £150 million to create independent, world leading testing and development facilities designed to reduce product development timeframes and improve the reliability of new renewable technologies for wind, wave and tidal generation.

WIND TURBINE BLADE TEST FACILITY Narec’s current assets include a 60m wind turbine blade test facility, 27m high wind turbine training tower, wave flume and marine scale testing facility. Spring 2012 will mark a significant step change with the commissioning of a 100m wind turbine blade testing facility and a 3MW capacity drive train test rig for tidal and wind turbines.

INVESTMENT

The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) is investing £25 million in Narec to fund the design, development and commissioning of a 15MW offshore wind turbine drive train test facility. This open access facility is crucial for the continued success and further expansion of the UK’s offshore wind industry and will be available for commercial testing from June 2013.

FIRST DEPLOYMENTS

The first deployments of prototype turbines at the Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstrator 100MW capacity site are expected in 2014. The site will accommodate up to 15 pre commercial prototype turbines in three arrays at various water depths offshore enabling manufacturers and wind farm developers to learn new approaches across the supply chain for the development, deployment and operation and maintenance (O&M) of new turbine technologies.

DELIVERING INNOVATIVE PROJECTS In addition, Narec is delivering innovative projects and is collaborating with industry and research institutions across Europe in two EU FP7 research and development programmes – Project Snapper and

WIND INNOVATION PROGRAMME Following the achievements of the Northern Wind Innovation Programme (NWIP), Narec has been successful in the second round of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund for the Wind Innovation Programme (WIP). The project will work closely with industry, technology providers and academia such as David Brown Gear Systems Limited, Siemens Wind Power Ltd, Newcastle University, Romax Technology Ltd and McNulty Offshore Construction Limited enabling Narec to drive the commercial development of seven new innovative products and services in the UK as well as addressing challenges currently experienced in the offshore wind technology supply chain.

NAREC CONFERENCE, 16TH FEBRUARY 2011 - HIGHLY ACCELERATED LIFETIME TESTING Narec will host a conference at The Royal York Hotel, York on the 16th February 2012. The event will focus on the industry requirements for demonstration and highly accelerated lifetime testing to reduce development timeframes and improve the reliability of technology going offshore.
