Upstairs front dining area at Gran Caffe L’Aquila
Gran Caffe L'Aquila once was located in the Abruzzo region of Italy - an award-winning landmark Italian restaurant - until it was badly damaged when its home city of L'Aquila was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 2009. But in 2012, the property’s then owners, together with Richard M. Longo, devised a plan to bring this café back to its former glory while at the same time relocating it to the United States.
The restaurant was designed and rebuilt in Italy, and shipped to Philadelphia, PA for installation at its new location. Today, its first floor is an authentic Italian bar, while the second floor features the restaurant, a wine bar, a cultural and lan- guage school, plus coffee and gelato labs.
Available for hosting corporate events, social celebrations, luncheons and other private affairs, the property’s team, led by Longo, can design customized experiences for groups. A Wine Spectatoraward winner and Italian regional cuisine specialist, Longo can design a customized wine dinner based on any region or city in Italy, pairing the food and wine of that region for a memorable and educational event.
Gelato Champion Stefano Biasini also can prepare an extrav- agant, cutting-edge culinary experience pairing gelato with Italian specialties. Wine pairing by Longo is available for these events, as well.

Longo, founding partner and director of food and wine for Gran Caffe L'Aquila in Philadelphia, notes, "We offer an authentic modern Italian atmosphere... We have been award- ed ‘Best Of Philly,’ Philadelphia Concierge ‘Best Restaurant,’ Wine Spectator‘Award of Excellence,’ and TripAdvisor’s ‘Top 10 Restaurants’ in the city."
"We can host events for groups from 10-200,” he continues, with functions that range from “an Aperitivo happy hour to Italian Tapas events to specialized Italian wine dinners based on the Italian region of your choice, and also Italian breakfast and gelato events."
Noting that trends in food service industry are moving toward a focus on higher quality food and beverage, as well as experiences, he observes that “higher quality wines are definitely trending." Longo also advises that, to stand out, events need “something unique and memorable within the food and beverage lineup."
Gran Caffe L'Aquila certainly fits that description, offering a very unique setting that combines with spectacular, authentic Italian cuisine to present a truly memorable experience for groups that is unlike anything else in the region.
