Right environment will get right results


The environment and delegate experience is crucial to the success of your conference or event. Sasha Ogborne, sales director at Canalside, provides her tips on maximising delegate productivity through improved environment.


In many workplaces, a lot of time and thought is given to how factors like plants, windows and artwork can boost wellbeing, and countless studies have explored the relationship between workplace enviroment and productivity. Despite being a significant investment to an


organisation however, a delegate’s environment at a conference is not always given the same care or attention. For some reason, it is deemed perfectly acceptable


to hold a conference in a soulless hotel room with no windows, and no breaks, yet delegates are still expected to maintain energy and enthusiasm for the sessions at hand. To maximise value for money and ensure your delegates are as productive as possible, here are my top tips.


Daylight robbery The availability of daylight is something that is so often overlooked but is crucial to the mood of your conference delegates. According to Psychology Today, a study by scientists at Northwestern University in


Chicago, reported that workers without windows had lower scores than their counterparts on quality of life measures related to physical problems and vitality. They also had poorer outcomes in measures of


overall sleep quality, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction, which in turn impacts productivity and mood. The same theory should be applied to conferences and, where possible, conference organisers should favour venues who can offer rooms with windows and plenty of natural daylight.


Room with a view Given the nature of where many city centre conference venues are located, they tend to offer restricted views, predominantly made up of high rise buildings. We’re not for one minute suggesting you should be


encouraging your delegates to stare out of the window – after all, you want to encourage productivity – but offering them an inspiring view may boost their mood and creativity. A recent study from Warwick Business School showed
