Business News

In Brief Business leaders in Greater Birmingham have paid tribute to former Lord Mayor and long- serving councillor Ray Hassall, who passed away aged 74. Mr Hassall, who died suddenly

at his Erdington home, had been a Liberal Democrat councillor for Perry Barr since 1990. He served as Lord Mayor of Birmingham from 2015-16. Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce chief executive Paul Faulkner, who, alongside Chamber president Paul Kehoe and Asian Business Chamber president Saqib Bhatti is a trustee of the Lord Mayor of Birmingham’s charity, said: “Ray was a tremendous servant and ambassador for the city of Birmingham. “As a trustee of the Lord

Mayor’s Charity, I had the privilege of getting to know him a little during his term as Lord Mayor. He was a warm personality and I know he was a very popular figure on both sides of the Birmingham City Council chamber.”

An established Birmingham- based recruitment company has completed its office relocation to Calthorpe in Edgbaston. ESA Group, formerly Edward

Samuel Associates, implemented the relocation after outgrowing its head office at One Victoria Square, opposite Birmingham’s Town Hall, due to continued new client wins. The company’s turnover

increased by 30 per cent year on year in 2016. Director Dan Heathcote said:

“The new premises give us greater opportunity to provide more parking for our staff and visitors, whilst still being in walking distance of the city centre. “Our new office is easily

accessible and offers a comfortable welcome for all of our clients and candidates.”

A £300 million ‘super hospital’ project is breathing new life into a historic West Midlands site. The state-of-the-art Midland Metropolitan Hospital –

part of the Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust – is being constructed on the former GKN factory site in Smethwick and is seen as a major catalyst for regeneration.

‘This project is creating a wealth of opportunities for local people and businesses, through jobs, skills, training and apprenticeships’

Scheduled for completion next year, the hospital is set

to boast one of the largest A&E centres in Europe and will employ around 4,000 staff. Carillion Building have undertaken the huge task of

redeveloping the site, which was purchased by the Trust after being vacated in 2006. Project director David Hollywood said: “Carillion are

very proud to be undertaking the construction of Midland Metropolitan Hospital.

local people and businesses, through jobs, skills, training and apprenticeships and when it is complete, the hospital will provide state-of-the-art healthcare for the people of Sandwell and West Birmingham for years to come.” Such is the scale of the development, there are around

500 workers on site at any one time. Among the hospital’s design features is a stunning

‘winter garden’ roof, constructed with the same technology used on Birmingham’s Grand Central and the Eden Project in Cornwall. And in a nod to the site’s heritage, the GKN factory’s Victorian entry gates will be incorporated. The Trust is also committing a third of the site to be

turned into public space for community use. The project is being supported by a £2m appeal led by the Trust’s charity. Johnny Shah, head of SWBH Trust Charity, said: “This is a unique health and regeneration opportunity for Sandwell & West Birmingham – the impact of which will be felt for generations to come. “This appeal will help us to enhance the wider benefits

of our new hospital for people within the local community, by fostering exciting new initiatives in areas including the arts, heritage, and research and development. “We believe this will give local people a world-class

facility they can be truly proud of – and is so much more than just a hospital.”
