Event helps ladies stay fit for business
Keeping fit was the main theme of the Chamber’s latest Women in Business programme event, which took place at the Mercure Newton Park Hotel, near Burton. The event featured fitness expert Kathryn
Williams, who delivered a range of tips on exercise and nutrition to an audience of more than 60 local business women. Kathryn, from Zestfit, said: “I was thrilled to
have been asked to speak to the ladies at Women in Business to help them make some changes during 2017, to improve their body and mind, which I believe will ultimately make them more successful in business – whatever they do. “The ladies were fantastic and actively joined
in all my activities to motivate and help them improve both their mental and physical state. The atmosphere was amazing and I hope they all got some practical tips to boost their confidence and health.” Women in Business partner Claire Twells, a
partner at Smith Partnership Solicitors, said: “We were so pleased to have sold out our first event for 2017 and to have Kathryn give us a huge energy boost to help us think about how we can plan exercise into our busy schedules around work and looking after a home and family. “We were also delighted to have raised £150
for our chosen charity Every Cloud who arrange for special gifts or experiences for people who are going through breast cancer treatment. “Kathryn is a mum-of-two and a business
owner, so she understands the stresses everyone faces on a day to day basis. The energy created at the event was brilliant and we know many of the ladies were ready to make positive changes to their lives to improve their health and fitness.” The next Women in Business event is 6 July.

32 CHAMBERLINK April 2017 Brush strokes: Artist Chloe hard at work producing another masterpiece to help the hospice
The Staffordshire-based Donna Louise Children’s Hospice has appealed to local businesses to help it build a new multi-million pound facility to help older users. The facility, expected to be located on the site
of the children’s hospice in Trentham, will be funded by The Denise Coates Foundation, with help from local businesses. It will help the charity achieve its aim of
continuing to help young sufferers after the age of 19. Such people previously had to be discharged from the hospice’s care. Mike McDonald, chief executive at The Donna
Louise, said: “Over the past year we have conducted numerous focus groups with our young people and their families to understand their needs as young adults and how we can best meet those needs. “What has become clear is that there is a real
need for our young people to have a place to go where they can be supported by people they trust, have the space to socialise with other

young adults and have facilities that help them develop the skills they need for more independent living.” The new building is expected to provide
facilities for both day care and overnight respite, along with a wide range of dedicated specialist services. Mr McDonald added: “The life expectancy of
children with life limiting conditions is increasing, yet appropriate care provision that fulfils the specific needs of these young adults is currently non-existent in our area. Without this service, within just five years, more than 40 young people currently in our care will have no appropriate care services available to them.”
MP welcomes Engine strategy
Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling has welcomed the publication of the government’s Midlands Engine strategy and hopes that this will address the West Midlands’ ‘lagging productivity’. In a recent debate in Parliament, the Midlands
MP welcomed the government’s renewed focus on addressing the country’s productivity growth, but raised the particular need to address such issues in the West Midlands region. She said that the UK had, as a whole,
consistently underperformed in terms of productivity versus other countries for some time, ranking equal fifth amongst G7 countries, and 18 percentage points below the rest of the G7 average. But, she added, productivity varies by region
and the West Midlands was among the poorest performing region in England, which she wanted to see remedied. She said: “It really concerns me that the West Midlands is falling behind other regions in England
in terms of productivity. We must ask ourselves why this is and what can we do to address this? I am therefore pleased that productivity and rebalancing the economy across the country is at the heart of the government’s industrial strategy and I welcome the recent publication of the Midlands Engine strategy which outlines concrete actions to tackle the productivity gap.” The MP, a member of the Business, Energy and
Industrial Strategy Select Committee, raised her concerns about the region’s productivity in a recent debate about the government’s Productivity Plan. She highlighted the need for various regional bodies, including the West Midlands Combined Authority, Local Enterprise Partnerships and the Midlands Engine to be involved in the delivery of the Industrial Strategy at a regional level, to address the productivity issue.
