For a make-up artist, Winter becomes a time to showcase your inner creativity. An opportunity for you to demonstrate some love of the more daring products in your make-up bag while giving your experimental flare a hall pass, the festive party season unleashes vampy tones, sprinkles of glitter and glamorous fun-filled looks.
This year, catwalk trends focus on berry- toned lips, graphic eyes and illuminated skin which shines from within. Worn individually, each option offers to boost your clients’ daily make-up without pushing them out of their comfort zone. When worn together, these looks provide a statement masterpiece which, when paired with a simple hairstyle and outfit, can speak volumes.

One of the most popular re-occurring trends during Winter is the berry lip. Showcased widely on Autumn/Winter catwalks including Rodarte, Erdem, Gaultier, Marni and Louis Vuitton, sumptuous and delicious shades of blackcurrant, deep raspberry and black cherry offer a simple version of a classic festive look.
“Feminine with a gothic edge, rich blackberry tones flatter almost every skin tone, adding an instant injection of vampy glamour to party season looks. A luscious blackcurrant lip is the perfect way to channel this trend, so keep the rest of your [client’s] make-up minimal for high impact,” comments Lynda Whitehead, Beauty Category Controller at Salon Services UK and Ireland.
“When recreating this look, take style inspiration from Christian Dior’s A/W16 show, where models’ mouths were painted the colour of Morello cherries, skin was bare, pale and ethereal-looking and eyes were defined by little more than bold lashes,” adds Anna Sorbie, Bridal Hair and Beauty Specialist.
To help these fruitful shades last all night, apply lip liner underneath your client’s lipstick. If you so wish, gloss or shimmer powder can then be patted onto the centre of the lips for a fuller, festive pout.

Turning our attention to the eyes, we see dimension created through the use of black liners and glitter. “Eyes have moved away from smokey finishes towards a more graphic look [this season]. Exaggerated cat flicks were seen at Dior and Elie Saab, with the lines definitely more visible and less blended. Again, the idea is to highlight one feature. Lips are either bare or lightly finished with a nude lipstick. Eyes had little or no other colour,” reports Nicola Wakeling, Mii Brand Development Manager.
“At Giambattista Valli, models wore barely-there make-up with a stripe of silver glitter under their eyebrows or on their eyelids, while at Anthony Vaccarello, the look was less subtle, with heavy dark eyes paired with winged silver jewelled eyeliner,” reveals Anna. “A great way to incorporate this trend into make-up is by taking inspiration from Kenzo and just adding a hint of silver glitter to the inner corners of the eyes. It draws light towards the eyes, making them appear fresher and brighter, without the glitter being too noticeable.”

Whether worn together or separately, pair both of these looks with healthy, glowing skin. The trick is to make the skin appear radiant, not oily or greasy. A simple glow- from-within look with a satin finish will help to tie everything together.
“A perfect complexion is essential: everyone wants their skin to appear imperfection-free, as healthy as possible and glowing on every day. While healthy glowing skin has also been popular on the catwalk for a while now, A/W16 complexions are set to look more glowing and more radiant than ever before - if the Gucci, Valentino and Prabal Gurung shows are anything to go by,” discloses Anna.
“Skin shows a real lit-from-within finish – a nude foundation with enough coverage to balance against whichever strong feature you would like to work with, but with a gentle glow to the skin to pick up the light. Rather than contoured, it had a much softer interpretation,” comments Nicola.
This can be recreated by highlighting areas such as the cheekbones, brow bones, corner of the eye and cupid’s bow as Anna reveals: “Avoid gel or liquid products to create the shimmer, as these tend to be less

subtle and can often make skin appear greasy or sweaty in photos. A peach-toned blusher on the apples of cheeks will complete the glow.”

Remember, while this is most definitely the time to experiment and offer up suggestions of different looks your client may like to try, not all styles you recreate will be suitable.
The best way to ensure you create a look your client is happy with is by interacting with her and finding out what she likes – take note of what make-up she is wearing when she walks into your salon, and pull from this to create your end result. For example, if she likes wearing heavy eye make-up, perhaps suggest paring it back with graphic bold eyeliner as a switch up from her daily look, without straying too far from her individual style.
Taking this personalised approach will really help to engage with your client and ensure she feels as confident and courageous as you want her to look when stepping out with her new party make-up.
