in conversation with a creative mind
Layla Tourh, Managing Director of The Creative Beauty Group and Owner of brands Exposed™
and Lashnv™, shares with
us the secrets behind her successful career...
I had just finished my GNVQ in Business Studies and wasn’t sure what my next move was going to be. Then just after my 17th birthday, a newspaper came through the door advertising free Beauty Therapy courses at the local college. After some consideration, I enrolled on a Beauty Therapy course, and to cut a long story short, 16 months later I opened my first business, Layla’s Unisex Beauty Salon.
The best thing about my job is getting to meet all the lovely customers not only at our headquarters and main store in Bournemouth, but also all of the amazing techs around the country who we meet at trade shows. It’s amazing to put names to faces as we have a very popular professional-only Facebook group that is constantly buzzing over the latest treatments and products from us.
I am very hands on with everything that is going on both at our headquarters and around the country. With four fantastic brands to manage we are constantly planning product launches and events as well as all that goes along behind the scenes with the trade shows.
I have three big achievements to date. In no particular order, being the exclusive UK distributor for Gel II® pretty big deal. Gel II®
is a is a breath of fresh
air both to techs and to The Creative Beauty Group as a whole. Exposed™
spray tan is
very close to my heart, as it is my creation, and ultimately part of a very big turning point in my career. Finally and by no means least, is Lashnv™
another brand of mine
which kind of happened by accident! Our customers who were already using other lash brands were regularly reaching out to me asking for TCBG to bring them a high quality lash brand, and then voila – Lashnv™ lash lift was born!
When growing up my role model was the ‘Queen Bee’ of the family – my mamma. Our household has always been a busy place, what with me being one of 11! Not only did she teach me to be independent and strong, but also a great multi-tasker and I couldn’t wish for a better role model.
My ideal weekend would be a weekend away with my husband and kids. I’m very lucky to have such an amazing support network whilst I’m busy with work. However as much as I love what I do, my children are always my number one priority and I always make time to spend with them.
I recently met my beauty icon at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards as she was hosting. The Essex sweetheart, Denise Van Outen is always so effortlessly glamorous and, after meeting her, I can say she is truly a lovely woman.
My top beauty tip is if you are a lash extension wearer, make sure you buy a silk pillowcase. Lash extensions are less likely to catch on silk than on cotton, so your lashes will last so much longer. We’re looking
forward to launching Lashnv™ ‘Extend’ in 2016, so lash extensions are big on the agenda.
The best piece of advice I’ve been given is, “Some rules are there to be broken.”An amazing business advisor, Steve Grady, said these words to me fairly early on in The Creative Beauty Group story and gave me the confidence to move forward with my business no matter what stood in my way.
I would like to be remembered as the girl who said ‘no!’ Standing my ground has stood me in good stead and has to be the best decision I ever made. Saying ‘no’ has lead me on this whirlwind of a journey with Gel II®
and my other brands which I wouldn’t change.
After the whirlwind of the last year and a half, and new ventures and launches happening all the time, we are taking each year as it comes. It will be exciting to look back in 10 years’ time to see how far The Creative Beauty Group will have grown.
