sally penford writes #NoFilterNoProblem

With the rise in trend for ‘no make-up’ selfies, Sally Penford discusses how to help your clients obtain their healthiest skin possible in 2016 and ensure they’re camera-ready for any occasion.

Some might say that 2015 was the year of the selfie, and wow has this made an impact upon the cosmetic industry!

Sadly for many it has meant piling on the make-up and the filters for that no make- up/full make-up, please ‘like me’ shot. But for many it has initiated an uprising with celebs including the likes of Kate Winslet and Scarlet Johansson posting ‘no filter no make-up’ shots to encourage girls to love the skin they are in.

As professional skin therapists, I think we are united in being passionate about helping people to achieve the healthiest skin possible. Aspirations of beauty and glamour are outdated and quite frankly marginalising to the majority of us who have pretty normal skin with its great days and not so great days and to those who suffer with truly challenging skin conditions like Acne and Rosacea. I’m in the business of skin health, not beauty. So how can we help our customers to achieve their healthiest skin possible in 2016?

As ingredient technology advances, so do the results we can hope to achieve. Here are some top trending ingredients / products we will continue to see make the headlines in 2016 that provide a helping hand towards achieving the best skin you can have – #NoFilterNoProblem.

primers

Primers have really come into their own and are continuing to provide more and more benefits as the desire for naturally glowing skin grows. However, the majority of primers focus on the cosmetic benefits of make-up application instead of improving the overall health of the skin. Many also contain comedogenic waxes and fillers that can lead to congestion, skin irritation and even sensitivity.

The skin health experts at The International Dermal Institute have taken the cosmetic requirement one step further and fused powerful skin treatment technology with the most elegant aesthetic primer chemistry available today to further redefine expectations of what a primer should be. A great primer bridges the divide between skin care and colour cosmetics by optimising skin health benefits according to skin condition and preparing the skin for extended make-up wear.

For particularly dry or dehydrated skin look for Sodium Hyaluronate, Algin and Trehalose to form a sophisticated complex that gradually releases moisture into the stratum corneum, optimising the skin’s hydration levels and controlling Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL).

For a sensitised skin condition with high colour, opt instead for a primer that has a natural sheer green tint to counter tell- tale skin redness. For a skin concerned about signs of ageing, look for an

illuminating primer to reflect light and create a healthy glow alongside SPF and antioxidant protection to fight environmental aggressors.

micellar waters / oil-based cleansers

With concerns over the effects of pollution upon our skin, cleansing has become a hot topic. The goal is thorough and deep cleaning while maintaining the skin’s integral pH. and barrier lipids… enter cleansing oils and micellar waters!

Micelles are the structures that surfactants form when they reach a certain concentration in water. Think of it this way: Surfactants are little chemical bridges with one end that loves water (hydrophilic) and one end that loves oil (lipophilic). When you dump a bunch of these molecules in water, the oil loving parts want to be close together to get away from the water. So, surfactant molecules spontaneously form these spherical blobs where the oily ends all
