eBUSINESS CLUB

As the leading provider of digital support in the East Midlands, the eBusiness Club offers workshops, funding advice and consultancy on all aspects of ICT and technology to improve business performance

Funding available for ICT

Companies are being urged to declare an interest in a new round of technology grant funding. The money should be used to

take ICT systems to the next level. Through its eBusiness Club, the Chamber has submitted bids for technology grant funding which will be used to help companies seeking funded digital support. Jon Egley, eBusiness Club Manager, said: “If successful, the grants will allow the Chamber to provide a continuation of services for the next three years. “The programme is designed to

support businesses in getting the most from their existing ICT with the introduction of new systems and software and to assist with the implementation of new resources.” The preliminary process requires

companies to declare their interest in the funding. The funding will depend on the amount of interest expressed. “It is a vital part of the process that companies which want to improve

their ICT express their interest at this early stage,” said Jon. The aim of the scheme is to provide financial support to eligible

businesses which want to introduce and develop new systems to improve business performance – especially those looking to invest in new technology. As well as the financial support, there is also a requirement to validate

that companies have an ICT setup worth investing in. While the funding applications have not yet been awarded, it would be

highly likely that the following conditions would apply in terms of grant funding:

• Types of business which may apply (ie, sole trader, partnership or limited company)

• Businesses must have fewer than 250 employees • Businesses must be trading for at least 12 months

Only firms based in the areas listed right will be eligible to apply.

Data protection laws passed

The EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation has successfully passed through the European Parliament. It is expected to take effect from spring 2018. The General Data Protection Regulation updates the principles of the 1995 Data Protection Directive. Data subjects, those about whom data is being

collated, will have more rights under the new rules. It will, in future, be necessary for the processor to

have the individual’s clear consent for the processing of personal data, the subject will have easier access to held data and the right to rectification and erasure, the right to object to profiling from collected data and the

right to have data ported to another service provider. The regulation obliges data controllers to provide

transparent and easily accessible information to data subjects about how their data will be used. Data processors must also provide appropriate

security to safeguard harvested information and, in some cases, to report data breaches. Public authorities and some companies will

have to appoint a data protection officer. Further, EU member states will each have to

set up an independent supervisory authority at a national level.
