Taking advice overseas

Later in the month, the message that more UK businesses need to think about overseas markets was reinforced with another Chamber/UKTI event. Aimed at the service sector, it

was a one-day workshop looking at regulations and taxes, VAT for services and digital products, the importance of being culturally aware, intellectual property and licensing, market research, the

different platforms for promoting services, preferential trade agreements, sales and routes to market, ecommerce and understanding payment methods. The content was designed to

help companies set up or run services in overseas markets. The workshop ended with an

introduction to the services provided by the EEN to help firms sell overseas.

A visit to Krakow has been organised

Polish cultural insight for East Midlands’ exporters

An information seminar has been held to give local exporters an understanding of the opportunities on offer in one of Europe’s fastest-growing economies. EEN and the Chamber hosted a

well-attended seminar at the University of Derby Enterprise Centre at the end of April, ahead of a market visit to the country in September.

Document service brought in-house

The Chamber has introduced an in-house service for Letters of Credit. Letters of Credit are essentially promises by overseas clients to pay for goods or services exported from the UK. If not fit for purpose, they can place at risk the UK firm’s ability to

receive payment for provided goods or services. The Chamber is also offering a full checking service for associated documents and can provide the documents from scratch if required. David Pearson, the Chamber’s Head of International Trade, said:

“The Chamber has, for a long time, not been able to offer this as an in- house service but we have listened to exporters and are now able to offer it. “This 'first-line' check will offer benefits including a point of initial

contact for exporters when they receive a Letter of Credit and help reading and understanding it and guidance on what documents will be needed with it.” The full service includes a detailed look at the Letter of Credit

transaction, its workability and process and handling the preparation of documents from the exporter to the bank.

Business wins follow UKTI Benelux trip

Two Derbyshire companies toasted success after a trade trip to Benelux organised by UKTI resulted in promising overseas business wins. Intrepid Brewing Company, based

in Hope Valley in the Peak District, received an initial wholesale order for its craft beers from a buyer in the Netherlands. And Buxton Pudding Company,

also in the High Peak, was invited to attend a major fine food show in Belgium to showcase its tasty sweet treats - with a definite order placed from a new deli in the Netherlands. Ian Harrison, UKTI Regional

Director in the East Midlands, said: “It’s always great to hear about first time exporters taking that ambitious decision to look at trading overseas and I’m genuinely thrilled to hear about the great reaction.”

partnership with UKTI, was aimed at giving local companies the lowdown on demand for British products and services in Poland, as well as arming them with the cultural insight needed to operate effectively. The seminar also saw the launch

of EEN’s company mission to Poland, in September, aimed at companies in the food and drink sector. Delegates will visit the 2016

Polagra Food Fair, an internationally-renowned trade fair. The mission will also incorporate

a visit to Krakow, with B2B meetings and company visits being organised by EEN. Jan Immel, the Chamber’s

International Trade Contracts and Networks Manager, said: “Poland’s consistently strong performance in the face of global economic troubles makes it an attractive market for East Midlands exporters. “With this in mind, we are

delighted to provide local businesses with these exciting opportunities to find out more and assist them in finding international partners.”
