CHAMBER NEWS Potential of HS2

The Hybrid Bill for Phase One of HS2 has concluded its passage through the House of Commons. The Bill is crucial for Phase

Mayor of Leicester Sir Peter Soulsby, Chamber President Jean Mountain and Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles at Friars Mill

A new home at Friars Mill

The Chamber’s office in Leicester has moved to the historic Friars Mill, on Bath Lane. Located close to the city centre, on the banks of the

River Soar, Friars Mill is a £7.1m restoration of the oldest factory in Leicester. The building was almost destroyed by fire in 2012. But Leicester City Council, backed with European

Regional Development Funding, has given the building a new lease of life as 15 individual workspaces, together offering over 25,000sq ft of usable space. The Chamber will be managing the site. Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles said: “We’re very excited to be managing Friars Mill. It is a prestigious

site and one we are very happy to call home in Leciester.” The full address for the Chamber’s new office is

Friars Mill, Bath Lane, Leicester LE3 5BJ. The telephone number remains the same, 0333 320 0333.

Interest in Friars Mill has been strong but there are units of various sizes still available to let. For further information, for a tour or to book space, contact Tom Munro, Friars Mill Centre Manager, on 0116 366 8197 or by email on tom.munro@emc-dnl.co.uk or Innes England, at 12 De Montfort Street, Leicester, on 0333 320 0333 ext. 2210.

One of the line, but also vital to the delivery of Phase Two from Birmingham to Leeds - including the route through the East Midlands and the proposed Hub Station at Toton. The development of an HS2

Hub Station serving the East Midlands has huge economic potential. Research carried out by

KPMG, on behalf of HS2, in September 2013, suggested an HS2 Hub Station at Toton could unlock anywhere between £1.1bn and £2.2bn of additional GVA in the region per year – the greatest proportionate uplift of any of the proposed HS2 stations. Scott Knowles, the Chamber’s Chief Executive, said: “The East Midlands lies at the heart of the country and is a real infrastructure/logistics sweetspot for the UK. HS2 is a crucial part of the solution to boost connectivity north to south and east to west.”

Partnerships with Businesses – “In Good Company!”

Hope Against Cancer has enjoyed some excellent corporate partnerships and generous support from local companies over the 13 years since we were founded to bring cutting-edge cancer research to our region.

As well as vital funds, companies have donated gifts alongside time and expertise, and have supported their staff’s involvement with us too.

Our vision for working with our local business sector is to truly understand a company’s objectives for community investment and identify any areas where we can be a partner to help fulfil these objectives whilst supporting the vision of the charity.

At Hope Against Cancer we’re proud of our Leicestershire roots – and we’re committed to creating mutually beneficial relationships with our region’s wealth of successful businesses and organisations.

Show your commitment to being an integral part of the Leicester and Leicestershire community – A commitment that can benefit both parties and in motivating your staff and customers.

Listed opposite are some of the many different ways in which local companies have, and can, support Hope’s vital research and ensure that Leicester remains a UK-wide centre of excellence for cancer research:

• Sporting challenges • Dress down days • Quiz nights • Christmas Hamper raffle • Make a donation in lieu of sending Christmas cards • Hold a sweepstake for the Grand National or the World Cup

• Bake cakes and sell them to fellow employees at coffee & lunch breaks

• Donate a day’s wages and be match funded by your employer

• Bag packing at local supermarkets • Take over a local restaurant for the evening • Sponsor one of Hope’s forthcoming events • Sponsor an edition of Hope’s newsletter • Promote payroll giving

• Match fund to a certain amount when an employee raises money

We are soon launching our ‘Hope through business’ club, a specific club designed to engage local companies in funding specific priority research projects that make a positive difference. For details please email: corinne@hfcr.org
