Imagine a couple of entrepreneurs that had found themselves at a loose end. They bought a van and did some courier work, picking up the odd contract here and there. Fairly soon, one van was not enough for all the work they were doing. Before they knew it they were running a fleet of vans... and a successful business. One of their clients asked if they would accept a contract to deliver pallet loads. Keen to accept new business, they bought a truck, obtained an Operator License and hired a transport manager. Business was going very well indeed. A few years down the line, with 20 vans, half a dozen
trucks and business booming, a cloud appeared on the horizon. Firstly, one of their trucks failed a roadside check, resulting in a missed delivery and an unhappy customer. The experience cost them money and the cracks in their business began to appear. More roadside checks and more missed deliveries followed, culminating in a visit from the authorities. An appearance before the Traffic Commissioner led to the business partners losing their trucks, their clients and ultimately their business. Why should transport operators bother with regulatory
