Also widely read by men Avoid Slippery Practices, Get the Right Engine Oil
Engine oil is engine oil, right? WRONG! If you think about it, engines are becoming more and more complex. It’s a testament to modern design just how compact and efficient engines have become. In reality, the basic design hasn’t changed over the decades, they’ve been tweaked and tweaked to near perfection. However, that means that they’re less forgiving if treated badly and using the wrong oil is simply a no-no. It’s like your engine is allergic to the wrong kind of oil.
There are many types and many grades of oil and even if it’s the same grade, it will be formulated for a specific engine make: VW, Ford, Citroën, they’re all different. On top of that, some cars require low-ash oil so that the filters don’t get clogged up prematurely.
If you do look after your car and use the right oil, you can genuinely expect your car to go much further between services. Manufacturers guidelines in some cases will allow 20,000km between services, but only if properly maintained.
At Larry’s we use Castrol Magnatec oil - a well known and very high quality oil. We won’t use cheap oil because we know that saving a few Euros now will result in expensive trouble down the road. Basically, cheap oil emulsifies, clogs up the engine and as you’d expect, leads to problems.
Where you get your car serviced is your choice, but we do advise you to ask to see the make of oil being used. Check it’s right. Ask questions and don’t be fobbed off. If you’re in anyway unsure, come and see us, we’ll give you accurate advice about keeping your engine in tip top condition.
