Treatment of the neck. advertorial

In most cases the neck is best dealt with a mini-lift that tightens the loose skin and muscles. In some cases, especially in men, we find an accumulation of fat resulting in a double chin. In some cases the neck virtually disappears, being just a continuation of the chest.

In order to restore the neck there is a very good and rather simple procedure which consists of liposuction of this fat. This is performed by inserting a small cannula of 2-3 mm though 3 small holes, two behind the ears and one just under the tip of the chin. Only local anaesthesia is required (nowadays after some IV sedation) and the whole procedure

takes about one hour. Stitches are not needed and a compressive dressing is applied for a few days (in most cases just for the first night) to prevent bruising. There is usually no need for pain killers and the patient may resume normal activities in about 3 days.

There is always a certain degree of swelling that gradually disappears within a week, and the only complication that may appear is bruising that may last up to two weeks and is more prevalent on smokers.

During the following 3 months there will be a formation of collagen fibres as a reaction to the passing of the cannula that will further tighten the skin.

As the fatty tissue is eliminated, fat is not likely to accumulate again in the same place so the result can be considered stable for a number of years, until the skin becomes loose again with age.

In some cases we have combined both procedures, the mini-lift and the liposuction of the neck in one, and the results have been a very dramatic improvement restoring a “Swan neck” to where there was only a double chin. As there are never two equal cases, each individual patient will have to be assessed to find which procedure suits him or her best.

Neck liposuction has brilliant results when dealing with fat but it is not the answer to a loose neck so if you have any doubts, please feel free to ask for a free consultation.

Now that good weather is coming, don’t forget to protect your skin. Remember to use sun tan lotion, do not jump into the sun with your usual winter colour, do it slowly avoiding sunburn. That is the best way to prevent skin cancer.
