NEW
FOR 2014 ‘WARHORSE TO
HORSEPOWER’ EXHIBITION
Nearby at Longhorn is the world famous MONKEY WORLD APE & RESCUE CENTRE. This is probably the largest facility of its kind in the world rescuing primates from the legal pet trade in the UK and other parts of the world. There is an active rehabilitation & conservation programme funded by charitable giving, so donations are welcomed. There are organised tours, a gift shop, cafe and things to do for the children.
Going toward the coast Winfrith Newburgh and Chaldon Herring (also known as East Chaldon) are two small villages in south west Purbeck surrounded by beautiful countryside. They are close to the Purbeck Way West walking route linking Winfrith Newburgh to Coombe Keynes and Wareham to the east, and West Lulworth to the south and to Lulworth Castle and Lulworth Cove with its pebble beach. The South West Coast Path from Chaldon Herring leads to Durdle Door with its magnificent arch and beach. To get to the beach walk through the holiday park and down the steep footpath and steps.
West Lulworth is where you will find the perfectly rounded bay of Lulworth Cove with its and variety of small shops and eateries. Boat trips and kayaking are available from here. A short walk from the Cove over the hill on the South West Coast Path brings you to Durdle Door.
Lulworth Castle and Park with its beautiful grounds and chapel is found in East Lulworth. Cycling from Wareham on the East Lulworth Ride is popular. There is an extraordinary cliff top lake, Stair Hole, and the beaches are some of the most beautiful in the area. More information can be obtained from the Visitor Information Centre at the Cove.

Discover the world’s best collection of tanks,
The YHA HOSTEL near Lulworth Cove is a timber rural retreat on the edge of a fishing village with plenty to keep everyone entertained for a great holiday or weekend break. So if you’re on a cheap family break, the kids will like Tower Park Leisure Centre in Poole, or the nearby Monkey World or Tank Museum. Relax in the licensed restaurant after a hard day exploring. Camping is available on some nights of the year.
Wareham is another gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. The focal point of this market town is the quay, where in yesteryear it was a busy and bustling place with great sailing vessels docking, today it is one of the most relaxing places in Purbeck. The town has many shops and every fourth Thursday in the month a farmers market is held at the Corn Exchange, there is also a market on the Quay every Saturday.
Near to the Quay the Purbeck Information and Heritage Centre hosts a mine of visitor information. At the main cross-roads is the small but fascinating Town Museum with an interesting section on T. E. Lawrence works. The old Saxon walls that still surround the town make an interesting walk of the boundaries. One of the highlights of the walls is the Saxon church of St Martins which contains early medieval wall paintings and an effigy of Lawrence of Arabia.
In the centre of the town the PURBECK SPORTS CENTRE is a large, multi-activity centre where everyone is welcome to use the facilities on either a regular or occasional basis. For the cycling enthusiast CYCLE EXPERIENCE has a store based at the railway station where there are a full range of cycles for hire at reasonable rates, plus all of the accessories.
For that special place to stay THE SPRINGFIELD COUNTRY HOTEL is a family owned and operated hotel situated just five minutes from Wareham train station.
