For unique artistry ABBOTSBURY STONE create beautiful bespoke memorials, headstones, name plaques, relief carvings and other decorative items for your home and garden.
Nearby Swyre is home to the BULL INN which, according to the comments on Trip Advisor, has a great reputation for food & four star quality rooms.
Parts of the long Chesil Beach are separated from the mainland by an inland lake called the Fleet Lagoon, there is nothing like this lagoon anywhere else and it is superb for shore fishing. Chesil Beach has been the venue for The World Shore Angling Championships and many other major competitions. Travelling down the beach area and inland to the Isle of Portland there are a many interesting villages to visit.
The Isle of Portland is the gateway to an array of activities like climbing, sailing, diving, wind surfing, sea kayaking and more. Good routes for walking holidays and some fine bird-watching opportunities. The Isle of Portland is not really an island but is reached over a narrow causeway from Chesil Beach. In this working and holiday area there a plethora of places to stay.

The CLIFTON HOTEL is a good example of what to expect, here there is the whole package, a restaurant, and a wonderful night’s sleep.
Whether it’s a destination holiday or a weekend by the sea Isle of Portland is a great place, and the Clifton Hotel, like so many other venues, is within minutes from some of the most breathtaking British coastal views. The YHA HOSTEL on Portland has spectacular views over Lyme Bay and Portland Harbour with Chesil Beach being nearby.
The local Portland Museum, housed in a traditional stone cottage, tells the history of the island. Displays include information about shipwrecks and smuggling, in addition to the history of quarrying. There are also geological exhibits and numerous fossils, and Portland Castle, built at Castletown in 1539 following attacks by the French, can be visited.
There has been a lighthouse on the southern tip of the island for almost three hundred years, to warn vessels navigating the English Channel. The large automatic lighthouse located three miles offshore warns mariners of the Shambles Bank. An older onshore lighthouse is used by birdwatchers.
