Port Isaac (Cornish: Porthusek) is a fishing village with steep narrow lanes that wind down to the harbour, with many nooks and crannies such as Squeezie Belly Alley and The Bloody Bones Cellar, once used for storing contraband with a tunnel leading to the beach. The village has speciality shops and galleries, a Post Office, bars and restaurants, and places to stay are plentiful.
There is a shingle beach adjacent to the village and other attractive sandy beaches within a short distance. Fishing and scenic trips can be taken from the harbour during the summer months, and there are lovely walks along the coast and inland. As with all Cornish villages parking is a problem, but there is a large car park at the top of the hill leading to the harbour.
Port Isaac is home to the sea shanty singers, The Fishermen Friends, who perform on the quay and beach during the summer months, please check with the Tourist Information Centre for dates. The village is used as ‘Port Wenn’ for the Doc Martin ITV series. Saving Grace, a successful comedy film, was also filmed in and around the village.
Port Gaverne is around the corner from Port Isaac. There is a sheltered, sandy beach, with rock pools, probably the safest in north Cornwall for small children. Some old buildings on the quay have been converted into holiday accommodation, and the 17C inn in the cove is recommended for its friendly ambience.
Port Quin, a few miles to the west, is largely owned by The National Trust. There is an interesting walk from Port Isaac to Port Quin. From the harbour, climb up Roscarrock Hill and take the route to Pine Haven. There are some beautiful views along the route and, close to Port Quinn, is Doyden Castle, once used in Poldark. The castellated folly was built in 1830 and is now a hotel.
At nearby St Endellion, classical musical festivals are held in the parish Church, at Easter and Midsummer. Located adjacent to the Long Cross Hotel are Long Cross Victorian Gardens which are the only public gardens on the North Cornish coast. The gardens are in their original Victorian layout with a maze, small lake, dovecote and children’s play area and pets’ corner.
Arthurian Country
Tintagel is a busy village in the holiday season with plenty to see and do. Not to be missed is the Tintagel Carnival occurring throughout the last week of July and the first week of August.
Arriving from the Trebarwith direction the first Arthurian sight is the Hall of Chivalry. From here it is a short walk to St Materiana’s, the Norman church that stands proudly on the headland overlooking the castle of King Arthur. Along the main street is the National Trust Old Post Office exhibiting Victorian postal equipment, a selection of samplers and furniture dating back to the 16th century. At the lower end of the village a steep track passes down through the vale of Avalon to the legendary site that is known as King Arthur’s Castle and at the castles very roots Merlin’s Cave awaits you. There is transport for the steep track.
KING ARTHUR’S ARM INN offers well furnished rooms with facilities for the disabled and very young children. The menu includes a good selection of homemade dishes with Gluten free, and Vegetarian choices. The pub has a large projection screen and discrete TV’s for those important events, plus a pool table and dart board. There is a free to use ATM machine, and free high speed Wi-Fi access.
Tintagel and its surrounding countryside offer something to appeal to every taste and interest. Stroll among the wildflowers on scented summer cliffs. Take a walk to Barras Nose to try your luck at seal-spotting, wander up to the lovely church with its ancient origins and breathtaking views. Hike to the Iron Age ramparts on Willapark, or delve into the mysteries of the amazing Rocky Valley and the magical St. Nectan’s Glen. Cross the common to Bossiney Cove to paddle in the pools or swim alongside Elephant Rock. Walk to Treknow a small hamlet approximately one and a half miles from Tintagel, from here there are stunning views across Trebarwith valley and Treligga towards Port Isaac.
Trebarwith Strand is a long stretch of sandy beach with plenty of rock pools just south of Tintagel. There is fairly good access from the road and the car park is a five minute walk. The beach is popular with surfers; there are summer lifeguards and refreshments available. Dogs allowed all year.

Bossiney is situated on one of the most romantic stretches of a truly awe inspiring coastline. The beach joins with neighbouring Benoath cove at low tide, both are relatively quiet compared with much of the surrounding area as people tend to completely miss it as they go from Tintagel to Boscastle, but as the tide goes out it reveals a long stretch of golden sand. Ocean Cove is nearby.
