Shepton Mallet is an ideal centre from which to visit the many tourist attractions in the area, including the cities of Bath and Wells. The town is delightful mixture of an old market town and the amenities of the modern world. It is set in a fold of the southern edges of the Mendip Hills; Europe’s largest cider plant is situated here producing house-hold name brands. In the town centre there is a fifty foot high 16C structure that was used to hang those sentenced to death by “Hanging Judge” Jefferies. The nearby Victoria Fountain has been recently restored. A 15C covered market houses a busy market every Friday.
There are plenty of tourist entertainment venues in and around Shepton. The annual Mid-Somerset Show is held on fields on the edge of the town, in addition the World of Churches Festival is a four day festival. The Great Dorset Steam Fair, the Godney Gathering and the four day long Royal Bath and West Show are all held in the town, or within a few miles. The Glastonbury Festival which, is the largest music festival in Europe, is held about two miles from town, in the village of Pilton.
To add to all of the things to do in and around Shepton Mallet to entertain the kids, the HULLABALOO SOFT PLAY CENTRE in Townsend Road is a place for the whole family to enjoy. Children 0 -12 will have a great time whilst parents can relax in the cafe, read the paper, catch up on emails or shop online. There is a special padded pit for the very young with seating for parents, toddlers have an assault course amongst many other things to try, and for the older children the fun is endless.
Frome Leisure Centre Frome Leisure Centre has
plenty to offer; 25m swimming pool, including children’s play area, a fi tness suite, sports hall, squash courts and tennis courts.

Frome is the fourth largest town in Somerset with more listed buildings than any other town in the county. Attractions include ancient Cheap Street noted for its historic shop buildings and the small stream that runs down its centre. Frome Bridge is one of only a handful of bridges in the world that are lined with shops actually on the bridge itself. Rook Lane Chapel is regarded as one of the most spectacular buildings in the West Country, and the Blue House (known as the Blue School), due to the colour of the school’s uniforms, is also interesting. The Merlin Theatre is a unique theatre built on a steep hillside, and the ECOS Amphitheatre built in 1990 is where a number of enormous standing stones form a semi-circle around the open-air stage area.
But it is not all history that makes Frome interesting for the visitor as there are a number of important festivals and events that take place throughout the year. Notably the Frome Festival, an enormous festival at venues across the town held during the first two weeks of July. Also the Frome Cheese and Agricultural Show is one of the most important events in this part of Somerset, and in recent years a reputation as a focus for Arts and Crafts has been developed. For leisure there are many different guided walking tours of the town, details of which can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre, and the FROME LEISURE CENTRE welcomes visitors.
At Longleat Forest, near Frome, is the Longleat Safari Park incorporating a whole range of fun-packed family attractions. Longleat House is set within nine hundred acres of Capability Brown landscaped grounds, widely regarded as one of the best examples of high Elizabethan architecture in Britain and one of the most beautiful stately homes open to the public.
A few miles from the town are the picturesque villages of Nunney, Farleigh and Hungerford with their romantic ruined castles. Beckington and Rode also have many features of historic interest including fine parish churches.
In any part of the Mendip’s countryside it is not unusual to see people horse riding, picnicking, camping, cycling, taking in the breathtaking views and generally enjoying the open air. Any country loving person would want to come again.
