Western-Super-Mare

P

ortishead retains a slightly old-fashioned ambience with the town centre being a particularly friendly place to visit. There are colourful flower arrangements throughout the main

thoroughfare during the summer period. Facilities in the town include a leisure centre, open air tennis courts, a large outdoor swimming-pool, a boating lake, cricket grounds, football and hockey pitches as well as many cycle lanes for those who enjoy getting out and about. June 4th is Carnival Day, July 6th is Fun Day on the water with a raft race, and there is a Flower Show on the 26th July.

Clevedon is a sedate town with a sandy/pebble beach, backed by largely unspoilt Victorian architecture. At Salthouse Fields on the seafront there are children’s entertainments and refreshments, plus bandstand offering concerts in the summer. The Pier is 18C and recognised as one of the finest in the country, there are the usual amusements and a pavilion serving cream teas. Cruises along the coast and to south Wales are available from the pier in the summer months.

Places to visit are the National Trust properties of Clevedon Court exhibiting a striking display of Eltonware pottery and a fascinating collection of Nailsea glass, and Tyntesfield where terraced lawns give way to spacious parkland filled with hundreds of trees collected by the family, and a glorious walled kitchen garden beyond. The Waterloo House Heritage Centre exhibits artefacts & information of Clevedon’s past and there is a souvenir shop.

Weston-Super-Mare is a family resort with all the traditional seaside attractions, including the famous donkeys. The wide sweep of Weston Bay has miles of clean sandy beach, and a level promenade boasting superb views over the Channel, particularly from the forty metre high Wheel of Weston. The beach has designated areas for wind and water sports, and there are boat trips around the bay.

Wet weather attractions include the Sea Quarium, the Weston Super Mare Museum, the Helicopter Museum, the Grand Pier with state of the art rides, food and candy floss. There is a wide variety of entertainment on at the Playhouse Theatre and the Winter Gardens to suit all ages. Away from the beach there is miniature railway, crazy golf, arcades, and the natural parklands of Ashcombe, Grove, Clarence, and Ellenborough.

Not be missed is the famous Weston Guy Fawkes Carnival plus numerous events on the beach throughout the summer, especially the ‘sand artists’ who make the most crazy things with sand. What more could anyone want for a holiday by the seaside?

For a great holiday the DOLPHIN CARAVAN PARK is situated along the coast between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea in the centre of Brean Sands. The holiday park presents beautifully maintained grounds and has been created to enhance the natural contours of the dunes which lead to five miles of beautiful, golden, sandy beach. Walk through the gates to find an abundance of activities and facilities for the whole family in the tranquil atmosphere for which Dolphin is renowned.

Burnham on Sea has one of the longest stretches of glorious golden sand in Europe, a total of seven miles, with donkey rides, boating and sailing, fishing or just sailing around Bridgwater Bay.

Burnham, like its neighbour Weston, is not only sand as there are many places to visit in the town and within a few miles. Apex Park has places to fish, a kids play area, skate park and walks, King Alfred’s Sports Centre has a full range of facilities for all ages. In the area there are several golf courses namely Burnham and Berrow Golf Club and the course at the Brean Leisure Centre.

Other attractions are; Brean Down & Fort managed by the National Trust, Brent Knoll, Stert Island, and Brean Down Bird Garden a tropical bird centre with things to do for the kids and a shop. Nearby Berrow has the Animal Farm Country Park set on twenty three acres behind Brean Sands, this is one of Somerset’s top attractions with all kinds of rare breeds, domestic farm animals and one or two surprises.

Highbridge has a lively farmers’ market on the first Friday of each month and it is very close to the sands at Burnham-on-Sea. With a railway station and a nearby M5 junction, this is an ideal centre from which to explore the Quantocks and the Mendips. If you are a golfer you will enjoy the championship eighteen hole course right by the sea.
