The best day out of your holiday in Devon might include tourist attractions like the beautiful gardens of the Royal Horticulture Society Gardens at Rosemoor, the fascinating Dartington Crystal Factory or the unique Barometer World Exhibition. Have fun in the woods at Survival Paintball or try North Devon Quads or MadTrax Southwest, play golf, go fly fishing; pheasant shooting or clay pigeon shooting, travel back in time to the English Civil War at Torrington 1646 where effigies of places such as the Houses of Parliament etc are built to scale in wood, and then burnt!. Alternatively enjoy theatre, art, music and dance at the Plough Arts Centre in the centre of the town. All of this is complemented with a huge programme of festivals and special events which welcome visitors of all ages at all times of the year.
For outdoor entertainment there are fabulous views, the Torrington Commons, wooded valleys, riverside walks and cycle tracks along the world famous Tarka Trail. For shopping and eating the delightful Victorian Pannier Market, award winning shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants will tempt you back into Great Torrington time after time.
The essential hub for visitors to learn about places to stay and activities in and around Great Torrington is the Information Centre at Castle Hill. Local people are proud of their heritage and can often be seen dressed in costume for re-enactments, festivals and celebrations. Visitors will enjoy more world class attractions in and around this friendly, market town than anywhere else in North Devon. No wonder Great Torrington has been voted North Devon’s ‘Most Welcoming Community’.
DARTINGTON CRYSTAL - Learn the history of Dartington Crystal in the Audio Visual Theatre and then follow the Dartington Timeline from 1967 to present day. On Tuesday and Thursday watch and experience the magic of Mango-Beads - expertly creating lamp work jewellery, made from the finest Italian glass. A Visit to Dartington Crystal is a family DAY OUT but the site is not fully accessible as a part of the Factory Experience includes stairs. Please call 01805 626242 for more information.

This is the traditional market town of Devon with a cattle market each Wednesday, also the popular Pannier Market. In addition there is also a Women’s Institute Market held every Wednesday. St Peter’s Fair week is held in early July each year with main event being the crowning of the Pretty Maid. There are also other festivals and fairs held throughout the summer.
Holsworthy Museum is found in the Manor Car Park, just off Market Square. This little gem of a museum features displays about an era of bygone rural life and is run with enthusiasm by a band of welcoming and dedicated volunteers.
HEADON FARM CARAVAN SITE & STORAGE is a family, dog friendly, site with grass and hard standing pitches. This is an AA 3 Pennant Site open all year with good access via an all-weather entrance. There are electric hook-up points, a heated toilet/shower unit and battery- charging facilities. Headon Farm offers secure Cassoa Gold Undercover and Outsite storage.
Nature lovers can enjoy a variety of wildlife, with buzzards, owls, foxes, badgers and deer to be seen in the quiet lanes. For cyclists there is the ‘Westcountry Way’ (National Cycle Route 3) and the Ruby Country Cycle Trail. A choice of fishing lakes, an 18-hole golf course, and a market town is nearby. To find us follow the Brown Signs on the approach roads to Holsworthy.
Hatherleigh is an ancient town of cob and thatch cottages where tranquillity can still be found and the stars seen at night. This town is not simply picturesque, but a working landscape and home to an active and welcoming community where history and tradition blend comfortably with modern life. Part of that tradition can be seen at Hatherleigh Market on a Tuesday morning where for generations farmers have gathered to buy and sell their livestock.
Hatherleigh is well known for its annual events that preserve the Devon traditions that have long been forgotten elsewhere. The Flaming Tar Barrel runs, a meeting of the Hunt and a Town Crier’s contest and the Hatherleigh Carnival are fine examples. There is a monument to honour William Morris who led the 17th Lancers in the first line of the Charge of the Light Brigade, and when visiting the town’s Belvedere Tower it is possible to see twelve church spires from this wonderful vantage point. Dates for all of the events can be obtained from the local information centre.
