xeter is a city for all tastes; the young at heart, and those not so young. There are lively bars and nightspots, an exciting quayside with water sports and small leisure craft to hire.


Cruises down the Exe and along the coast, and fishing trips are available.

Places to visit are Exeter Phoenix Arts and Media, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Tuckers Hall, St Nicholas Priory, House that Moved, Catacomb, and the unique medieval Underground Passages. There are a free Red Coat Guided Tours with options ranging from Ghosts Tours and legends to exploring the Catacomb & underground passages by torchlight. Close to the city there are a number of professional golf courses, plus putting greens for the whole family to enjoy.


Exeter has become a unique shopping centre for the Devon & Cornwall peninsula with High Street names as John Lewis, Ikea etc and many independent boutique style outlets. So if you are a shopaholic or want to find that ‘something special’ head for Exeter.


Near Exeter at Haldon Forest you can try the classic and original GO APE experience. Topsham is a historic estuary port with much to see, do & visit. The Topsham Museum includes exhibitions and Vivien Leigh memorabilia. The Goat Walk beside the Exe Estuary offers wonderful views and sunsets. Also worth seeing are the estuary mudflats and the Bowling Green Marsh RSPB Reserve. There is a passenger ferry to cross the Exe for pleasant walks, pub lunches and dining in water-side inns. There are also short and long cruises to discover the wildlife of the Exe Estuary or the beaches and coves along the river banks.


Five miles from Exeter Broadclyst village is home to Killerton House and Markers Cottage to visit here is interesting and there is plenty to entertain the kids.


Exmouth with two miles of golden sandy beach is the seaside resort for Exeter. There is every type of beach leisure activity and amenity available. Cruises on the idyllic River Exe leave from the quay to enjoy the stunning scenery of the majestic World Heritage Jurassic Coast. Or simply watch the amazing array of birdlife.


The Manor Gardens are well known for floral displays in summer, and the Strand Gardens with its trees and flower displays provide tranquillity for a break away from the beach, or can be a good meeting venue in the centre of town.


Budleigh Salterton has a gently curving two-mile pebble beach with red sandstone cliffs and is safe for swimming. This part of the coast is also popular with sea anglers. At the eastern end is the Otter estuary, an ideal location for bird watching. Popular places to visit are Bicton Park Gardens which is also a theme park with many attractions for the children, and the Fairlynch Museum which is noted for its collection of period costumes, its many geological specimens and its excellent local history resources. There are also three thousand acres of wild heathlands to discover on foot, by mountain bike or even on horseback.


The three day Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival commences on the 18th September. This is an opportunity to hear & meet talented authors, scientists, playwrights, historians, broadcasters, economists, comedians and rising literary stars.


Nearby is East Budleigh where there is a strange tradition, on All Saints Day the vicar of the church and his sexton throw buns down from the church roof to children standing in the churchyard. Within walking distance is the village of Otterton and the Domesday Mill with its two water wheels and the mill machinery should be on your list of places to visit.
