Within Torridge are the popular towns and villages of Bideford, Great Torrington, Westward Ho!, Clovelly and more.
Where the Taw and Torridge rivers meet, sits the delightful quayside village of Appledore with the family beaches at Instow on the other side of the river. The Quay is very central to life in the village hosting many activities including fishing trips, crabbing contests, and sometimes Morris Dancers. In Elizabethan times Appledore was a main port for tobacco imports, and a nautical air can still be found around every corner.
When is this area the Northam Burrows Country Park is comprised of salt marshes, sand dunes and generally unimproved grasslands. The Park is open to pedestrians at all times but there are restrictions on vehicles. The Burrows Centre is open from the end of May to early September.
Bideford still retains its old charm and is equally well known for its great shopping, large numbers of lively pubs, variety of places to eat and popular night spots. If you wish to enjoy Bideford at a more sedate pace you can stroll around the town exploring the narrow streets with brightly coloured shops. Victoria Park has excellent colourful floral displays or just sit by the quayside and watch the world go by. At high tide there is plenty of action, this busy port is in regular use by local fishing boats, all manner of pleasure craft, large container vessels and the Lundy supply ship “HMS Oldenburg”. The Oldenburg is also a passenger ferry with regular pleasure trips to Lundy Island.
Across the water lies Brunswick Wharf where the historic schooner, Kathleen & May, is a favourite tourist attraction. If you want to learn about the town and its history call in at the Burton Art Gallery & Museum or the Bideford Library, or the Bideford Tourist Information Centre, near the entrance to Victoria Park, will be able to tell you about local events, leisure activities, nearby attractions and the traditional annual fun events including the Bideford Folk Festival, Bideford Regatta, Bideford Water Festival and Bideford Carnival.
Lundy Island is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bristol Channel with nothing between it and America. In the hubbub of the modern world this peaceful and unspoilt granite outcrop is a place apart. People return time and again to the simple pleasures that Lundy affords; the sea is clear, the landscape spectacular and at night, without competition from street lights, it is truly dark and the stars shine with an unfamiliar brilliance. To book accommodation, or to inquire about sailings to Lundy please contact the LUNDY OFFICE on Bideford Quay.
