sawmill and was able to suss out what I thought was an adequate amount of Bird’s Eye Maple. I shipped my local wood all the way to Seattle, Washington, where Rick Mack had developed a great reputation for creating the wood sets for 1950 Woodies. (If you want a lesson in the complexities of cross-border trade, try shipping raw wood.) “This car was a late 1950, which


meant it had some steel panels and a metal skin on the back tailgate. I went back to the original 1949/early 1950 all-wood model and, when my wood set arrived all formed and ready for fitting from Rick Mack, I thought I would have that car on the road by the Fall of 2011. “Was I wrong! “I spent a good two years


accumulating all the bits and pieces at car shows and over the internet and through the National Woody Association, but I knew what I needed was a good parts car. I began that hunt in the Spring of 2011 and found my ideal ‘parts’ car online. I headed down to New Hampshire where, in a magnificent old cedar barn, stood a one-family-owned late-1950 Woody Station Wagon. “I started that thing up and knew


right away it was going to be mine. “With very minor negotiations, I


headed back a month later with the trailer and took almost the entire month to do the onerous paperwork to get a car back across the border. “After the obligatory two hours at the


border, despite having the appropriate paperwork in two weeks ahead of time, I brought my ‘survivor’ into Canada. The car drove quite well and, with a few minor tweaks to the old flathead V-8 and a visit with Grampa’s Garage here in Ottawa to get a certified appraisal, I made the decision to spend a little time on that car. The only thing I wanted to do was to unify the paint and sort out the wiring. “I found John McLaughlin up in


Venosta and I decided to re-wire and re- paint my ‘Survivor’ and keep it on the road. “Armed with a complete, original
