CAR CLUBS

GIUSEPPE CASTRUCCI

From bad boys to GOOD CLUB

I have had the pleasure of writing about car clubs in Bounder these past five years. I always smile when people tell me the story of their clubs and how they all began.

The Chelrod boys have everyone beat hands down. The club’s beginnings are due to some young men taking an unfortunate path in life with a break in way back in 1964 in Chelsea.

The local police decided the lads had too much time on their hands. Another young fellow by the name of Gerry White agreed.

Gerry and Don McGillvray, with other local kids, started holding sock-hops and dances featuring local bands. They were able to raise the funds needed to start the Chelrod Club. It gets better. A local farmer sold them a piece of land, and Cohen & Cohen gave them a great deal on blocks, i-beams and other building materials.

By 1965 the money had been raised.

They all pitched in together and built their own clubhouse and two-bay garage.

Gerry White, the founder; with current president, Jordan Fleming; with V.P. Jonathan Holmes; and with Secretary/ Treasurer Bernie Simpson.

The Chelrods can be found on Face-

book. This club offers quite a bit for those in the Chelsea area looking to meet people of like mind.

The garage is fully loaded with tools and is available for use to the members. The clubhouse comes equipped with TV, couches and a BYOB Bar. All members are given a key, based on the honour sys- tem, to the facility.

Jonathan and Jordan are quick to point out that the place is hopping during NAS- CAR races and other sporting events. (It’s
