get more active, we should rise up and down on the toes to exercise the calves while brushing our teeth or cooking. This assumes, of course, we all brush our teeth 13 times daily in order to give those gastrocnemius muscles a proper workout. As for cooking, how on earth does

it help with take-out? Another suggestion stated we

should park in a spot further from the store to create more walking. Excellent idea. But what happens to the parking spots close to the store? Seems a waste. Sitting is the new smoking. In

fact, it’s also being linked to rising rates of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. According to the CBC, a Newfoundland company, Statoil,

provides its workers with standing desks. Both Denmark and Norway require companies to make it easier for employees to work while standing. The stats are more alarming

for the over 60s. A study from the U.S. Journal of Physical Activity and Health concluded that “the odds of a person being disabled were almost 50 per cent greater for each hour spent in sedentary behavior.” (My guess is they meant “sitting”.) Advances are being made, but

how would standing in some jobs work? Do I want to be in a taxi with a driver who is rocking to and fro on his feet to the beat of some obscure song? What about pilots? If they lower cockpit floors to accommodate standing, does that mean less space for carry-on bags and ultimately a higher price to bring them on board? Will Air Canada’s bitty bags of 7 pretzels get smaller still? Can a Member of Parliament

stand in the house? Will we have to change the name from having a seat to having a stand? And what happens when a minister needs to make a point? Is he allowed to bring in a step ladder so he can stand taller when spouting forth? What happens to the standing

ovation if everyone is standing to begin with? But good news folks. There

remains, and will always remain, one activity we should never ever do standing.
