TRUE BREW

Summertime… and the [beer] drinking is easy

JEFF O’REILLY

We did it! We survived a brutal winter and

an almost non-existent spring in hopes that we’ve earned a perfect summer to make up for all our suffering. Sunshine, short skirts, golf, fishing,

camping, festivals… the list of things to do is nearly endless, and the opportunities to share those good times with friends is nearly just as long. So do yourself a favour. Instead of

reaching for your old stand-by beer, why not give something new a try? Here are a couple of options to suit the season:

Pistonhead Kustom Lager Brutal Brewing, Grängesberg, Sweden 4.6% ABV 6 x 355ml cans The Beer Store, $13.55 Great looking packaging that just

screams “Get Your Motor Running!” This straightforward lager pours a clear pale straw honey colour with a tight white head. Aromas show sweet and slightly floral notes. Clean grass and biscuity malts are simple and inviting, as tastes of lemon and grass before the bready malt backbone balances things out. The beer itself is light, refreshing and uncomplicated with next to no aftertaste, making it perfect for pairing with lighter fare like chicken or fish and can be enjoyed as a reward for completing the weekly “honey-do” list.

Muskoka Detour ISA Muskoka Brewery Inc., Bracebridge, Ontario 4.3% ABV 30 IBUs 6 x 355 ml bottles LCBO, $13.65 This is a style that you should expect to see more and more of. India Session Ale is

basically a light India Pale Ale designed to have the best characteristics of IPAs with a lowered alcohol content and increased drinkability becoming something that you could easily enjoy throughout an entire evening or drinking “session”. If you are looking for those great IPA flavours without worrying about getting hammered on a couple of beers, this could be what you are looking for.

Detour pours a slightly cloudy amber gold

(it’s unfiltered to allow you to enjoy all those great flavours – so this is a good thing) with a rocky off-white foam cap. Bright and beautiful tropical fruit aromas (tangerine, grapefruit and mango), grainy malts and a hint of pine before flavours of grapefruit, orange, sweet caramel, bready malts and solid hop bitterness arrive to cleanse the palate. Light to medium bodied, the beer has good carbonation, smooth drinkability and shows off a short sustained finish. It’s a great pairing for barbecued burgers in the backyard or an afternoon of casual enjoyment at the cottage.

Nickel Brook Headstock IPA Best Bitters Brewing Co., Burlington, Ontario 7.0% ABV 80 IBUs 473ml can LCBO, $2.85 India Pale Ales continue to be a dominant

style, and Headstock is a great example of the big bold aromas and flavours that have kept this style growing in popularity. The beer is a slightly cloudy (also unfiltered) burnt orange – two inches of thick white head after an aggressive pour. Massive aromas of citrus/grapefruit hop and pine hit you with every sip while hiding subtle hints of floral hops, caramel and bready malts in the
