WorldCupcollectables Mark’s view is borne out by the historical

performance of the Collectables sector during major sporting events. NPD data shows that in 2010, the last World Cup year, the category hit close to £20m in value. 2012, the year of the London Olympics, saw the category finish the year at £24m. The years in between were all worth significantly less. Jess Tadmore commented: “This will be a successful year, aided by a wide variety of new launches and products entering the market. The competitive nature of the market allows for a better and more exciting product offering for the consumer. There have been some strong performers which have ignited the category with fantastic support from licensors and retailers.” In agreement, Dom Daltilia commented: “2014 is proving to be a successful year for sports collectables. We have already seen sales increase year-on-year and anticipate that the Summer of sport ahead will further support this positive uplift.” So with an estimated 2.4m people in the UK set to be after football collectables during the tournament, the Brazil- based sporting event provides a massive opportunity to retailers and suppliers alike. Unveiling some of Topps’ products, Dom

D’altilia explained: “As an official England partner, Topps has full England team rights, and we will be leveraging our association with the English FA and maximising our support of the Three Lions this Summer by bringing two key collections to market: the

Topps Match Attax Official England World Cup Trading Card Collection and the Topps Official England 2014 World Cup Sticker Collection. As official products, these will be the only sticker and trading card collections on the market that will feature the England team in their brand new kit, which will be unveiled in April. We’ll be encouraging the country to get behind the Home Nation and become official supporters of England with our official collections.” And for Panini, Jess Tadmor commented: “The official 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil sticker collection and trading cards provide a huge opportunity for retail this year, and we are forecasting a massive 30% growth in terms of retail sales value on our collectables compared to World Cup 2010. We are investing heavily across all retail channels, which we expect to drive sales and volume across the board. The World Cup Sticker Collection presents a fantastic opportunity for retailers to drive volume and revenue. Panini is a brand that is synonymous with football and the sticker collection will undoubtedly boost footfall into stores across the board. We know that our collectors will continue purchasing packets until they complete the collection. Our EPOS data shows that stores who continue to support and list our Panini collectables will see

great sales figures over the weeks to come. 2014 will be our 12th World Cup collection, we started in 1970 so that’s 44 years of association with the tournament. With Brazil hosting, the 2014 World Cup is set to be one of the biggest and most celebrated tournaments ever, and here at Panini we are gearing up for what is set to be one of the most successful World Cup campaigns.”
