C A R P E T S , R U GS & TE X T I L E S Ian Bennett

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our dear friend and colleague, Ian Bennett, passed away at his home in Bath on Christmas Day. As many of you will know, Ian had not enjoyed the best of health in the last few years and it had become increasingly difficult for him to get into the Saleroom, even so, his sudden death has been a great shock to us all.

Ian started at Netherhampton Salerooms in March 2004 having relocated from Woolley and Wallis in Salisbury where he had catalogued the carpet and rug sales since the year 2000. His previous career included working at Sotheby’s and as editor at HALI, the International Journal of Carpet and Textile Arts. His knowledge of carpets, rugs and textiles, as well as many other subjects, was extensive and his recall of knowledge was amazing. Ian wrote many books including the highly acclaimed Rugs and Carpets of the

World and Oriental Rugs, Vol. 1, Caucasian, as well as hundreds of catalogues, articles and reviews on a wide range of subjects. He will be greatly missed.
