MOVING FLOORS

“DUAL PURPOSE SPACES HAVE A PARTICULAR APPEAL TO POOL OWNERS IN AREAS OF VERY HIGH PROPERTY VALUES. IN CENTRAL LONDON LOCATIONS, THE BENEFIT IN PROPERTY VALUATION OF A WELL DESIGNED DUAL-PURPOSE POOL ROOM EASILY OUTWEIGHS THE COST OF THE MOVING FLOOR”

stainless steel cables.

The materials allow high loadings and offer maximum safety and durability and this gives Variopool’s movable floors a lifespan of more than 20 years. Barr + Wray and Variopool are working together on a £1.5m development project in the UK.

The two companies have joined forces on the new state of the art Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham under main contractor Carillion. This is Barr + Wray’s highest value order for a moveable floor to date and the company has been contracted to design, supply and install the brand new aqua-leisure facilities. Barr + Wray will provide the new sports complex with a 50 metre pool with a state of the art moveable floor together with experts from Variopool.

The floor will allow the pool to change from a 50 metre competition pool to two 25 metre short course pools and from a depth of 2.0 metres to 3.5 metres. Barr + Wray will also design and install a brand new sauna, mosaic-tiled steam room and a spa pool.

Installation of the pool and moveable floor is now underway and the sports centre is scheduled for completion in April 2015. Lorne Kennedy, European Sales Director at Barr + Wray said: “Barr + Wray has offered movable floors for several years now and we find them to be a key factor within swimming pools.

“Moving floors give the client much more flexibility within their operation to offer a

greater range of activities for the customer including swimming lessons, water polo and sub aqua.

“As much as they bring an additional cost consideration to the project at the outset, they can also give the customer a greater financial return due to their flexibility.” This is particularly true in the case of hydrotherapy pools which require varying depths depending on the patients’ disability, age and training activity.

Physical treatments often take place in private, semi-private or small groups and movable floors can help to facilitate the different methods.

The fully adjustable floors provided by

Variopool help to improve the safety and accessibility of aquatic therapy systems. Safe access into the pool is also guaranteed by the use of specially designed ladders and steps, or by installing gradually sloping stairs directly into the movable platform. The movable floors and stairs provide the optimal solution to turn therapy pools into a state of the art rehabilitation centre.

ADJUSTABLE POOL FLOORS FOR AQUATIC THERAPY AND MUCH MORE EWAC Medical movable floors from Swimming Pool Fitness are easy to use and requires the absolute minimum of adaptations to the construction of a pool. The water flows easily through the floor so that optimal recirculation is ensured. Because of this the water quality in the pool is optimally guaranteed. Two types of adjustable floors are available – a suspended version for pools up to

and a buoyant version floor for larger pools. The company offers a wide range of implementation possibilities, which can be adapted to the client’s needs, for example a pool could be fitted with two movable floors with an adjustable safety screen between them. As an alternative to this system, they also offer the possibility of creating an adaptive stairs system between the two platforms. The adjustable floors are built up out of a stainless steel AISI316 frame, which is covered by polyester tiles and can be made to fit any size or shape of pool. Movement is achieved using a safe water hydraulic system, preventing water contamination. The movement system is integrated in the frame of the movable floor, so there is never a need for divers to do any service and maintenance work underneath. SPN

CASE STUDY Therapy Pool Benefits From Moving Floor Option

Therapy pools are a particularly demanding application for a moving floor. The pool itself is unusually deep, has a very high filtration turnover, and is used almost continuously. Installing a moving floor from The Lifting Pool Floor Co Ltd all owed the staff and patients at this centre in the Chilterns almost total avoidance of the manual transfer of patients, or the need for a cumbersome, expensive separate pool lift, as the moving floor itself can be used to lower patients into the pool. In this setting the moving floor also has a role as a lifesaving appliance because should a swimmer encounter difficulties whilst in the water, staff have the ability simply to raise the floor in order to recover them to a dry environment.
