POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

A Year To Be Remembered!

BSPF MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRIS HAYES RECAPS ON A BUSY YEAR SO FAR AND LOOKS AT WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE START OF THE NEW YEAR

will be totally aware of the work that has been developing with colleagues in Europe to set domestic pool standards. There has also been work on updating and adding to some of the commercial pool standards. The domestic pool standards for in-ground and above-ground installation are tantalisingly close to completion and are due to be for sale from summer 2014 onwards. The domestic pool standards for water filtration, circulation and treatment should be out for public consultation in February 2014, so please read the documents and make your comments known. BISHTA has been negotiating a new

W

Working Group to begin work on Domestic Spas and Hot Tubs, but funding for the project has not been secured yet. However, this has not stopped work to discuss what should be included when the standard is eventually written.

Our work in Europe has also extended to hosting the work of EUSA, under the Presidency of John Scott. The important work that EUSA does to lobby on matters regarding standards can also be appreciated in their work to promote the industry. The obvious example of this promotional work is the hosting of the first ever European Pool and Spa Awards, details of which are to be found on page 78. Congratulations are extended to Kris German and Glen Gardiner from Harris Pools & Leisure Ltd for their Silver award success in the Domestic Spas category. John Scott will be reflecting on his time as EUSA President in the next issue of SPN.

Networking opportunities remain an important part of the year, not only SPATEX,

but also SPATA regional meetings, the AGM’s and President’s Weekend. With the AGM’s being held in late November this year, there will be a report on them in the next issue of SPN. A series of regional meetings have been held around the country and the latest one is scheduled for Wednesday 11 December in Huddersfield. Please call the office for details, if you are interested in attending. As for the President’s Weekend, this was a lovely event in the New Forest and there is more news about Martin and Delyse Borley’s activities on page 34.

Although we have been without a PR and Marketing Manager for four months of this year, I am delighted with the work being undertaken by Sallie Golding, who arrived in September. Sallie is working towards revamping the websites for BISHTA and SPATA to be more consumer focussed. However, the websites will continue to offer a huge amount of information for members as well.

Thanks to the hard work of Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani and the directors, SPATEX 2014 in Coventry is virtually a sell out already! More news on SPATEX is on page 36 and I hope that you will be supporting the event, either as an exhibitor or as a visitor. The Industry Gala Dinner is open to everyone and the ticket price of just £59.95 + VAT per person is very good value for money. There are many awards being made available from BISHTA and SPATA and ISPE will be recognising their previously presented awards.

The features on our members continues in this issue, with a profile on Complete Spas (BISHTA) and Cheshire Wellness (SPATA). There are also some questions answered by our experts and if you have any questions that you want answered, please do not hesitate to contact the office. The end of the year is always a good time to express my gratitude to the many people that directly assist me every day in my role. Crockford, based at the Andover offices provide a vital contribution to the smooth running of our day to day assistance to members. I have already acknowledged the fabulous work done by Michele and Helen and each of the companies is also very lucky to have dedicated Chairs for the respective Boards, Committees and Councils of the various companies. They are committed to setting the right direction of travel to meet the needs of the industry. I would like to express a huge thank you to John Scott (EUSA), Martin Borley (BSPF) Richard Carrington (SPATA), Issy Rickards Sanger (BISHTA); Jamie Adams (PIP) and Howard Gosling (SPATEX) for leading these companies and also the many dedicated Committee members. Special mention needs to be made of Patrick Thorpe for his long standing commitment to the BSPF family of companies, as Company Secretary for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. The Technical teams have worked tirelessly this year under the leadership of Peter Lang and Howard Gosling and SPATA is also very fortunate to have three inspectors (Peter Lang, Jim Gordon and Tim Bareham) to advise members on standards. The SPATA regions benefit from the dedication of the regional chairs and thanks are due to Claire Asher (Midlands), Stephen Booth (Northern), John Scott (East Anglia), Ben Studdy (Thames Valley), Bradley Cannings (South West) and Jamie Smith (South East). There are also many partners that help with the smooth running of the businesses and special thanks go to those that we work with most often and they are Jon and Tony at Aqua Publishing), Keith Bull at Nsure and Stuart Thwaites / Philip Harris at Wright Hassall Solicitors. Each of these companies plays their part with ongoing help and advice throughout the year. With best wishes for this festive period and I look forward to seeing you in the Midlands at SPATEX 2014.
