FILTERS & FILTER MEDIA
Filter Products That Take The Strain
THANKS TO YEARS OF INVESTMENT IN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, FILTERS, IN THEIR MANY FORMS AND GUISES, ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP A WATER CLEANSING SYSTEM IN A POOL OR SPA. THANKS TO IMPROVED TECHNOLOGIES AND BETTER EFFICIENCY, THEY’RE ALSO NOW THE FIRST PLACE TO START LOOKING WHEN IT COMES TO COMBINING RELIABLE WATER MANAGEMENT AND ENERGY SAVINGS By Jon Wadeson
offer advice and guidance. Bruce Coppuck, Certikin’s Executive Sales Manager said: “Pool and spa filters will always be required whether it be for new build, refurbishment or simply a media change for the filter itself, so they have fared reasonably well in recent years. But there are obvious pitfalls to avoid when choosing a product. The obvious issue is to ensure that you have the right filter and media for the customer’s requirements. Following guidelines from SPATA and PWTAG will help to ensure the selection is right. “For commercial operators it is worth noting that the PWTAG code of practice now recommends the use of continuous PAC (poly aluminium chloride) dosing for medium rate filtration. This is basically a coagulant which should be dosed continuously and precisely by chemical dosing pumps. Continuous PAC dosing is highly effective in ensuring quick and affective removal of Cryptosporidium from swimming pools and swimming pool filters.” When asked what they would recommend as the ideal plant room package for commercial pools, Defender Filters advised: “The ideal plant room package for commercial pools as we see it would be the best, most efficient filtration system which we feel would be one that uses regenerative media and a quality controller. This would reduce costs on water, power, chemical and labour substantially.”

As to whether their products and services have made a difference with plant room management, Kingsmead Leisure’s Maintenance Manager commented on “how little time he now spends in the pool plant room” and Paul Feeny the Centre Manager at Westport thought he had “walked into a different pool hall the day after the Defender was switched on”. High praise indeed!

greatly over the years. Every installer/retailer has their own preference, be it well known brands, or functional models that are reliable but without the price tag. Top mount or side mounted valves play their own part, whether it be the size of the plant room or the visual benefit in seeing backwashing take place. With so many to chose from Bosta UK, part of the Mega group, offer the full spectrum of filters. Their new Mega SMG side mount filter has a stylish look and feel with its smooth gel coat fibreglass finish and offers great reliability but with a price tag that makes it accessible for everyone.
There has been the trend to offer filters that have the capacity to save customers money by helping to reduce the amount of chemicals required in the pool. The Pentair Triton and Tagelus ClearPro filters benefit from patented microfibre technology which offers unparalleled levels of filtration (10µ microns). Such fine filtration gives unrivalled water clarity and reduces the levels of chemicals needed. Bosta UK have been

successfully selling these units for over two years and more customers turn to ClearPro filters every day.
Many companies have been buying filter media through local sources and have not shopped around for the best deals on this bulky item. Bosta UK have also found that nearly all customers are now buying their filter media in pallet quantities as this is helping overall costs. They have been providing both glass and sand filter media for many years at great prices and customers are taking advantage of their carriage free deliveries. Glass filter media has continued to increase in popularity and is being specified on larger commercial projects regularly with its potential to reduce the amount of chemicals in the pool.
CERTIKIN FILTERS OUT THE BEST
The filter medium that is currently in vogue is recycled glass which, of course, gets the environmentally friendly vote. If it wasn’t used in filters it would end up in landfill sites but, that

is also more effective than sand. The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has conducted a number of commercial water treatment trials using recycled glass as a media and the results were highly favourable when compared to traditional sand. Glass outperformed sand, both for the amount of suspended solids removed and for the amount of influent treated, before a backwash cycle was required. It removes up to 30% more material and pollutants than sand. It’s also less susceptible to bio-fouling as the product’s heat treated surfaces are smooth,
