lines or a traditional, handcrafted, wooden option, when it comes to saunas and steam, the array of available products and suppliers is huge! That’s great news as the demand for these ‘wellness’ products and the health benefits that they provide shows no signs of cooling just yet! Gerard McCarthy, Sales Director at Dalesauna comments: “Generally speaking, the recession has caused greater polarisation in the market. At one end of the scale you have the luxury residential market, which in our experience is booming and has been quite unaffected by the downturn. At the other, you have public sector facilities with a desperate need to revamp their tired and frankly inadequate pool-side saunas, but no funds to do it. “Happily, there are exceptions to the rule with some local authorities taking a more bullish approach as they realise the valuable contribution wellness facilities can make to people’s health, not to say a facility’s bottom line.”

Researching the product and supplier is important as Gerard advises: “Make sure you do your research. Research your supplier thoroughly and ask for references from previous installations. And check your quotes. Specifications often vary so make sure you are comparing like for like when looking at quotations. The cheapest quote isn’t always the best.”

“This sector of the industry has fared well during the recession as a lot of facilities have realised that to capture the visitors/sales/guests they have to offer an up to date wet leisure facility with good looking sauna and steam rooms,” advises Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson.

“But leisure operators want

use of lighting, feature walls and unusual finishes. As a key player in this market, Certikin has been at the forefront of this trend and has completed projects with some really unusual features.”

DALESAUNA ON TREND WITH DESIGN

Dalesauna has been providing bespoke heat experiences for 40 years and during this time they’ve seen sauna and steam room design evolve considerably. They’ve also

experienced how developments in the luxury sector influence the look and feel of heat experiences in domestic homes. They are currently seeing a trend for ‘ultra bespoke’, highly designed and finished sauna and steam rooms in the luxury residential market. An example of this is the £600m David Chipperfield-designed De Vere Gardens scheme in Kensington, London, where they are delivering sauna and steam facilities for the lavish basement spa.

Made from veneered lime wood panels, the sauna boasts a modern and distinctive design. Obeche laths measuring 35mm x 35mm have been affixed to the interior walls and ceiling of the sauna to give the effect of a corrugated box. The contemporary theme continues into the steam room, which is clad in Italian marble and features shower fittings of the highest quality from Dornbracht. The steam room was constructed to correspond perfectly with the pre-cut marble slabs, requiring the utmost attention to detail.
