LIW will have taken place at the NEC in Birmingham and following it, the industry’s attention will then turn to two major European biennial shows – Piscina Barcelona in Spain and aquanale in Cologne, Germany.

In this issue we have a preview on the Catalonian event, which this year has created a more complete offering by encompassing three distinct markets in a single aquatic exhibition – swimming pools, wellness and aquatic facilities. We also look at some of the familiar names that await visitors and report on an interview with Eloi Planes, President of the International Aquatic Exhibition, who discusses the show and the wider industry outlook.

Well what a fantastic summer season it’s been and what difference the weeks of glorious sunshine have made to the industry. Everyone I have spoken with over the last couple of months or longer has been rushed off their feet in what has been one of the busiest years for, well, far too long!

But the good news doesn’t stop there. The UK economy is also showing further signs of improvement and the two combined have meant that 2013 will be looked at by many from within the industry as a very positive year.

Now as the weather is starting to turn, so too are the thoughts of the industry towards the cooler autumn months and for some, a chance to draw much needed breath! In this issue of SPN, we focus on subjects that are relevant to this time of year, with features on both Enclosures that can extend the all too short season and Winterising pools to ensure they require the minimal of effort when opened next year. We’ve also cover Tiled Spas, Salt Chlorination, Stretch Ceilings and of course, much, much more.

But before you settle down with your latest copy of SPN and a well earned cuppa, there’s still plenty more happening in the fi nal months of this memorable year.

By the time you receive this edition,

In Germany, aquanale will play host to the inaugural international European Pool Awards which are being presented by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA). The European Pool Award will go to winners in three categories: private outdoor swimming pools, private indoor swimming pools and private whirlpool facilities. I’ve seen and voted for the UK’s entries so good luck to each of them as this initiative could provide some fantastic marketing opportunities for the industry.

Coming back to the UK, I recently attended the central London launch event for the Register For Aquatic Professionals (RAPs). Targeting those in the commercial operators sector, RAPs will provide verifi cation that those working in the industry are fully qualifi ed to perform their role. It will support the training needs and career development of those working in related roles, including swimming teachers, lifeguards, pool managers and pool plant operators. More on this initiative will follow in our next issue.
